How to speed up host name resolution?

Good evening all,

I have a problem with the speed of host name resolution in Win7. I use VNC on my laptop to connect to my main pc (both running win7 ultimate). If I use the host name to connect using vnc it takes about 30-60 sec to resolve the name and eventually connect. If I use the IP address it's instant. I noticed that if I turn off the firewall on my main pc the host name resolution is instant as well (that's not something I want to turn off though). Any ideas on how to speed the host name resolution?

It sounds like the solution would be to add an entry to the "hosts" file on the laptop. There are instructions in the file about what an entry looks like (typically all that is in there is the comments, set off by a ";" as the first character of a line.) I'd try adding your main system IP address and name and see what that does. (You're right in not wanting to turn off the firewall.)

The "hosts" file is in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc or wherever you have the main WINDOWS directory.
