I have to argue with your poll, I have run into tons of "IT Professionals" but I have yet to meet a "Computer Expert" for no one can tell you every little thing about "every" piece of software/hardware.

I agree totally! Im a CIS Instructor and I refrain from saying I am an expert... a good point! But this is a self rating so I put both at the same level for this poll.

This field moves and advances so quickly NOBODY can know everything, and if somebody claims so... beware!

In Lake Woebegone, everyone is above average. Reading hardware reviews at Newegg, I learned that everyone is highly skilled. These very same people complain that their new shiny 1.5 terabyte drive is only 1.39 terabytes and they are going to return it for that reason.

Hmmmm... I work in an IT Department of a large university.

We have lots of people who seem to think they know all about everything (always the thing I seem to be working on), but really know squat.

Measured by the time to (as I usually take less of it) and ability in getting things working (I usually deliver something with few - or fewer errors) I am incredible. As the decades pass, I realize, I know more than most but certainly not more than everyone.

Ego's abound, but true greatness is not measured by the size!

(did I really say that?)!!!!!!!!!

All of my systems still run fastest on XP 32-bit for the most part. Win7 is fun to play with, but I still prefer XP for raw speed, security, and functionality.
I'll say I'm an Advance User/Geek even tho I am an IT Professional. However I do not feel right saying that, I do not know everything and there is always something new to learn. So naturally I put myself one bar lower.

I could easily get most certifications concerning Microsoft, Cisco, and others. However, I am just way too lazy to bother. Sad I know. Already finished off my first Associates of Computer Science (major: Networking), and currently involved on my Bachelors for Security.

Don't ask me how I know most of the things I know....I just know it... O.O

Yes, certifications are important, but I know many "pros" who are "paper certs" only - that means they memorized or braindumped what they needed to pass the cert exam.
But when it come to "real world" application and/or problem solving... they cant do squat!

I chose Computer Expert/ IT professional even though I only have my A+ I got at 16... But I am now the Senior System Build Technician for a small Canadian PC company... which means I don't even build or software systems anymore :( I just make sure everyone is up to speed, doing their jobs and help out when issues arise.

What's "Above Average"???? I can usually figure out what's wrong with something and how to fix it, but on the other hand, I would definitely not say I'm anywhere near an expert...

I would define Average...in relation to Computer Skills...as someone who can operate the computer at a basic level

I would define basic as someone who can start the computer...browse the web...install new programs that don't require tech knowledge (Firefox for example)...check email...shutdown the computer...ask for assistance and understand such assistance in an acceptable manner

If you are above average...those things above should be natural for you while harder concepts may be still "over your head"

I am fortunate to be paid for my IT work so by the strictest of definitions I am a professional. As this level is unfortunately blended with the "EXPERT" category I look at it like a tax write-off: If I am eligible I will take it, despite the risk of audit. :)

Computing is primarily business use with off-time troubleshooting practice: Remote desktop, scanning and producing invoices, some minor graphics work.

Well technically I am an IT pro. I work at the canyon park server facility for Microsoft. I am a server technician there. But really, my day consists of downloading any big files I need to using their 100MB/s connection, twittle my thumbs, and watch movies. And occasionally deploy a new server, pull some new fiber optic cables, and sometimes fix the problems with the servers when a ticket comes in.

But other than that, its pretty damn boring. I went to their Bravern lab once, and damn. They have some amazing stuff there. They even have a 1GB/s connection :( I want that in Canyon Park lol.

Techincally speaking, I am an IT pro, I have all the papers, a masters in computer science, and MS certs, Cisco certs, all that stuff. But it all doesn't help me too much with Windows 7 when I'm used to $100,000 servers lol.

You can always learn something you didn't know from other people in forums like this!

I myself repair and build PC as a hobby and I frequent many forums and am offering help and advice more than asking for it but I DO ask for it when I run into something I am clueless about or have found some oddity which I am good at LOL. Once fixed a laptop in under 10 minutes that a group of CERTIFIED technicians said was fried turns out it was not and was actually a very simple fix.
