Well, I lump myself into the IT Professional category as Windows and Linux servers are what I do for a living.

However, after spending most of the day trying to figure out how to remotely manage a Hyper V 2008 server from a Vista Client or Windows 7 client which was on a domain....I've started to second guess my skill level. Why in the hell does Microsoft has to make this such a convoluted process? I mean for Pete's sake, VMWare ESXi is like a cake walk compared to this product. Oh well, I've got it working now and documented my steps...so I guess maybe I am an IT Professional afterall.

In my mind an above average user is one who can fix most of his or her own problems on a mass produced machine.

An advanced user are those like the majority of us here. We build our rig and can research and fix most of our problems.

I would def say I'm an advanced user but not an upper-advanced user like many here.

Thus the poll is flawed and needs a semi-pro category.

Nobody is over the Brink. Period. Case closed.
Yeah Brink is fantastic...

...but also remember that we all excel in certain areas. Everyone knows that he excels in tutorials but I bet that if you asked him he would tell you what he has trouble in: we all do

We all play our part. I specialize in drivers and general OS support (more specialized in certain fields...Installation and Setup, Windows Desktop Experience and Software) while I will be the first to admit that I lack in advanced debug (BSOD debug for instance...which is why I lurk H2SO4's posts...I AM NOT A STALKER!!!) and many other areas.

I think it's also hard to understand all that is out there to really get a handle on what you know. For example, I know lots of tweakers who have spent oodles of time configuring their XP, Vista or Windows 7 desktop and know quite a bit about it. In fact, their knowledge would decimate what I know.

But on the flip side, I'm familiar with configuring Cisco routers and switches, I've worked with NAS and SAN devices like EMC and NetApp, I'm as comfortable supporting Linux machines as I am Windows hosts, I've configured Exchange Servers, SQL Servers, Fax Servers, Backup Servers and web servers. I've setup Active Directory domains, configured group policy and rolled out patches via tools like WSUS and Patchlink. Finally, I've been working with server virtualization for a number of years using everything from virtual pc, vmware, hyperv and even an IBM Z390 mainframe.

So, while I cannot claim to know everything there is to know about windows 7...I do have a fairly wide breadth of experience in the field. And I think unless you are in the IT field...you might not even realize how much more there is out there to know and learn.

Haha... I have absolutely No training in IT. :o
I am a Clinical Pharmacist. (I stamp out disease and Pestilence...most of the time anyway)
My wife (Teacher) had to get a computer for her work 14 years ago and I got frustrated because I could not make it do what I wanted. So I tinkered with it (when she was at work, of course) and when I broke it I had to make sure it was working by the time she got home.
One thing led to another and I ended up building rigs for friends and family (for fun).
Long story short, the "Hobby" spiraled out of control and I now have computers everywhere...that my wife and kids "demand" that I keep running.
Things were just starting to quiet down...then....BAM...Windows 7 comes out...with a whole slew of new tricks to learn.

Nope, I am NOT a computer expert...but after 14 years and 5 operating systems (I skipped Vista) I get by.

..and my "friends" still give me their computers to fix..(go figure)..so I am here trying to learn and keep up.
BTW..I hail from Newport Beach. Looks like lots of us are "neighbors".

O.G.?

c'mon... l.a.?

don't hear too many people talkin 'bout O.G.s...

So Cal baby! Riverside, CA to be specific!

I'm not a gangsta... quite the opposite, I'm a peckerwood! The O.G. is just a tag to illustrate that I've been in this game for quite a while.
I've been tinkering with PC's since the early DOS days, Macs before that, I've been through every offering of Windows MS has released, including most server products as well. I currently teach CIS and run a small consulting biz. I teach the Basics through Networking, and Apps as well!

So, while I admit I DO NOT KNOW EVERYTHING, I still consider myself to be an IT Pro.

PS - A shout-out to my homies: Doc, Brink, BarefootKid, and jfar!

Every day I manage the systems that power a 94 site, 60000 user, 25000 computer active directory domain. Along with training our techs on how to properly service, image, and maintain the desktop clients and users needs as well.

I dont know every little tiny detail about Windows 7, but I am certified on every windows client OS from XP on and am fairly heavily certified on Server 2008. One more test to go before I get the MCITP: Enterprise Administrator credential (think MCSE for Server 2008)

I would call myself above average, but I'm still unsure. Although being able to build computers and repair them, and do it because I find it fun, and always keep on learning new things on computers. I've been the one with the highest grades in the A+ Essentials 1 class at college, but since taking a programming course, didn't continue in that field. I do have the manual they gave me and will try and pass the A+ certifications when I can afford it, which I don't think I will have much trouble doing. One thing I find weird though is that some people I know say that I do a better job than the town's computer repair shop  I don't know if they're just saying this to give a good feeling though.

Anyway, you might not see me post on these forums a lot since like on every forums I am, I lurk more than I post.

I frequent these kind of forums to help people, but mostly learn new things, which I think is the way to go.

hmm, lurking, unseen, watching with out being watched.... what actually constitutes Stalking? :p

Seriously though, his posts are worth lurking - as are many others. We have some serious talents in many diverse areas on this forum.

Personally, I have neither paper qualifications nor do I get paid for anything IT related, so I guess that rules me out of the "Expert" category.

However like many others on this site, I am not devoid of intellect and am aware of my strengths and weaknesses.

So even if I'm not an "Expert", I'm still a hell of a long way from being a noob :)
