HP 15-f018ca Notebook PC - Hard disk (3F0) error - would like to fix

I am attempting to repair an HP 2013 (so I am assuming windows 7). I have never booted the system as it is a repair. I did the research to find out that it looks like windows 7, and the make is the HP 15-f018ca Notebook PC.

• The bios works and I can access it
• It does not boot to safe mode that I can see - tried a couple of time and nothing occurred.

When running the computer for the first time (since I acquired it), it was in a looping "repair mode",stuck on repairing disk error. I left it on all night and the following error showed up the next day :

Bot Device not found
Please install an operating system on your hard drive
Hard disk (3F0)
F2 System Diagnostic

Next accessing the HP diagnostic resulted in the following error:

Failure ID : 9U015G-7B79B3-MFPV6K-60FR03

I am guessing I need a windows UBS boot disk to try and get this going. The owner does not have the windows KEY or any documentation to help me through this. The owner would like to retain the info on the hard drive if possible.

Suggestions?

Running the HP system diagnostic for Reset PC did not work and Startup Repair did not work either. Presently researching on how to create a window usb repair or boot disk

The HP 15-f018ca has Windows 8.1 pre-installed.

I'd assume there is a corruption of the BCD store, in which case you'd need the windows 8 installation disk or a recovery disk to access the cmd prompt.

Using the HP diagnostic, I have access the cmd prompt

From a cmd prompt window, type bcdedit /store C:\Boot\BCD /enum, and take a picture of the result.

do I need to go to a specific folder? If not,

bcdedit /store C:\Boot\BCD /enum

gave me this error : "bcdedit /?" command line assistance.
Perhaps the store command it doesn't recognize?

Then check the disks with DISKPART

at cmd prompt, type:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
LIST VOL
​

and take picture of results.

Okay.

There is no volume with the label "OS" - that could be the problem. Volume 1 looks suspiciously like it has not been formatted, as it is still RAW.

If the OS was on volume 1, it might still be recoverable. But that is beyond my knowledge.

Ok thank you. Do you know how and where I would get a usb recovery tool for this system without having the key? And as you said, it must be windows 8

I would try a RAW file system recovery utility first, to try and recovery your customers data. Is the COA sticker still attached to the computer case? The product key should be on the COA sticker. Then you can download Windows 8 ISO from heidoc.net. Otherwise, I'm stumped.

W8 comps ONLY came with a postage stamp sized sticker, usually on the rear of the laptop
4 windows and Windows 8 id.

As all W8 comps came with EUFI bios the product key was stamped into it during manufacture
You DO NOT need a product key.

So to recap, best bet is to take out the HD and run it in a hd bay to retrieve the data?

There are no stickers, just an INTEL one.

This I cannot find, even using a magnifying glass.

Product key like i said its Imprinted in the motherboard during manufacter,

Probably the old owner deleted the C: partition to erase all his data.

I would do a Factory recover. It will load an image from the Recovery partition. You will end with a installation as it came from HP.
You can launch the Factory recover from BIOS.

Will this save the data on the drive? I am still trying to save the data from the drive before I do anything else...

The C: partitions is RAW (not formatted) so there is nothing on it.
What data are you trying to retrieve? In witch partition it was on?

This is a fix for someone, so I have no idea. They said they have data on it they want to save, not sure if it is pics, video or docs...I think it has some school work or something on it. I am just going to check the drive and copy the contents to a USB and go from there
