Can you enter into safe mode? Normally by hitting the F8 key on start up. Then you can select safe mode with networking and go look for the latest video driver for you system and check to see if it's better than or the same as your current driver.

Next, tap F8 again to access Repair console, or boot the Win7 Repair CD to run Startup Repair repeatedly.

Startup Repair should ask if you wish to System Restore. If not, boot back into Recovery tools list to choose System Restore and work backward to see if you can get behind the problem.

There are additional steps you can try. At any point you can copy out your files using Repair console if they are not properly backed up: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/93347-copy-paste-windows-recovery-console.html

It is now stuck on the start up repair. Start up repair has been running for about 3 hours. It won't allow me to cancel it. Should I just let it continue or turn off then turn on my laptop?

I would wait. Startup Repair has a time out if it is not repairing.

If you can't wait any longer, try booting back into Repair console to System Restore from list. First use the method I posted above to copy out your files if you didn't already.

Were you able to get into Safe Mode; if not what was the error given?

Have you made your HP Recovery disks? Do you still have the Recovery partition on the HD which can be run from boot by tapping the F11 key, to recover to factory condition?

By copying out files, are files then saved on the laptop? So i will not lose them if I recover to factory condition?

I really do not know anything about computers.
