HP LaserJet 1200

Adrian, I started doing the steps you described. While I was waiting for the driver to download, I wondered off to the HP forums where I stumbled upon a solution:

Control panel then Settings then Add Printer
Choose "Add a local printer". Click on "Create a new port". Use Local Port.
Next dialogue box is "Enter a Port Name."
Type in the path to the printer: \\(computer name)\(printer name).
Then select the proper driver, and print a testpage.

I quickly tried it and it works like a charm!

And thank you for your effort and patience!

You are my hero!!! I have been looking all over for a solution to get my LaserJet 1100 working from a Windows 2000 shared system, and this worked perfect!!!!

Sorry to bump a somewhat old thread, but I really had to show my appreciation!!

Are any of you successfully printing two-sided with the HP Laserjet 1200 series?

I have a the HP Laserjet 1220. It's the 1200 with a copy option. I used Windows Xp for years and it took many tries to find a driver with configuration options for two-sided printing. Windows 7 64-bit recognizes and installs a driver that has a two-sided option, but the printer will only print one-sided.

I bought it in 2001, but there is nothing wrong with it and paper is too expensive to print one-sided.

The printer will print two-sided when connected to an XP machine.

Many people are facing the same problem of compatibility with between the printers and the OS, their has to be some solution that can end this problem. At times you cannot use or connect your printer with your system when you need it the most. One of my friend ruined his Savin Toner 2522 when he thought that the printer has some problem.

You the Man!

I wish I knew this work around several months ago. I had to take our workhorse LaserJet 1200 off the 3 computer network I put a 1TB hard drive in my computer and installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I could never get the 1200 to print from my computer and bought a HP LaserJet 2035N to replace the the 1200 which is installed on one of the other computers. Network Ready Printer Not! Only printed one copy at a time. HP said they couldn't have all of their drivers workable for Windows 7 64 bit.

I came across your solution today, and my 1200 is back in place working away. The P2035N is going to the attic to sit hopefully for another 5-10 years!:D

Hey Barefoot. Did you find a solution to the double sided printing problem you describe above? If so, please let me know, as I have exactly the same problem since I upgraded from an XP to a separate Win7-64 laptop last week.

For everyone who is still having these troubles, please follow the instructions above by Zoltan. I wrestled with my new Win 7 x64 client trying to get it to connect to my LaserJet 1200, which is connected to an XP client by USB. Despite having shared out the printer, and being able to connect to it by my x64 client, I COULD NOT get the driver to install correctly until I followed the directions above EXACTLY. Yes, you need to make it a LOCAL PORT, and you will already have the right driver on your (up to date w/windows updates) Windows 7 install. If you have previously tried to install another way, make sure you uninstall and delete anything you did before, and then REBOOT before starting over with the instructions above. THANKS AGAIN, Zoltan, Adrian, and everyone, I spent 5 HOURS TODAY messing with this, and I'm an admin. (Maybe not the best admin, but...) :)

Hey Kevdoggy,

thanks for that. Does your HP LJ1200 now also print double sided under Windows 7 (as presumably it did under XP)?

Laser Jet HP 1200 Printer

This forum is a blessing, like many of you I was frustrated after getting a new PC to not be able to hook up my HP Laser Jet 1200 Printer due to not having a USB cable (have the LPT cable) and being told by HP that they no provide support for the 1200 printer and that it would not be compatible with Windows 7. From your Forum I can now see we can keep our printer.

I do have a question, I understand one can purchase a USB cable for connection. If any of you has done so, can you tell me what I need to get?

Appreciate your help.

You should be able to find a cable at Radio Shack, Amazon, CyberGuys, etc. They come in different lengths. You want a A-B cable.:geek:

What happens to me is Windows Update offers to update the driver, but it always fails. The solution offered by Windows Troubleshooting is non-existent. I've had this printer for about ten years. One of the reasons I bought a laser was it's lifespan. It printed double sided in Windows XP, but when I tried XP 64-bit it would not print two-sided. I have no idea why the 64-bit drivers won't allow it.

I thought I'd try this again and here is what happened. I disconnected the printer and removed the drivers and rebooted. I downloaded the 64-bit XP/Vista driver. When right clicking there was no option for compatibility mode. The driver installed but when I connected the printer it installed the drivers that come with Windows. I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.

It still refuses to print two sided. The option is there in properties. I hate wasting paper!
