Hi All,

My scanner just stopped working!

Error message: "Scanner communication cannot be established."

I've tried the following:

- uninstalled HP software (all)
- check to see if there are any device drivers leftover - none
- cleaned out %temp%, temp and prefetch
- ran HP Printer and Scan Fix - nothing happened, just sat there on scan.
- uninstalled HP software again and re-connected wireless settings.

I use my scanner all the time. Any suggestions or help would be most appreciated.

With thanks,:)

P.S.

All are working!?

Check Window Image Acquisition - Auto & Start - On
Remote Procedure Call - same
Shell Hardware Detection - same

It sounds like you are running your scanner wirelessly. I believe HP has an option of doing the wireless setup via USB cable; in other words, it establishes communication via the USB cable, so that it will then be able to operate wirelessly.

Very important with HP (you probably already know this): do not plug in the USB cable until it tells you to.

Hi Mr. Jim,

I did not use the USB cable in order to re-install the wireless printer/scanner because my printer is not close to the computer. It's also rather big! I don't remember using a USB cable initially!? Can't remember that far back...;)

Remind me of the steps I need to take.

Thanks bunches, :)

I had an Office jet 8620. Died (developed unresolvable paper feed/jam problems) a little over two months after the warranty expired. The 8600 series, from what I find, are not very reliable. Possibly there is a hardware problem.

Hi Mr. Jim and fireberd,

I got it to work! I had to turnoff my Bitdefender temporarily (all features). Then I ran the HP Printer and Scan Doctor. It seems to be fine now. There were no errors?

Weird!

Best, ms

Miss Sherlock:

Glad you got it to work! Scanners can be difficult sometimes. Wireless scanning lagged many years behind wireless printing in the Windows world, but they finally have got it to work well. In the Linux world, wireless scanning is currently lagging behind wireless printing; if you go on some of the Linux forums, you will see what I mean; people have lots of trouble getting their wireless scanners to work.

Not sure why I didn't think of your a/v product; but it makes sense to turn that off if you can't get something installed, then turn it back on after.

Jim

Hi Mr. Jim,

Well, I think I spoke too soon! The scanner is off again. This time I tried updating the drivers via Task Manager. It seems to be back on for now. However, when I turn the computer off and back on, it's not working again????

New updates from Microsoft are: Microsoft.NET 4.7.1 KB4054852 and several Microsoft Office 2007. I'm running Bitdefender Total Security 2018 (installed last September 2017). I haven't had any problems until this past week.

Any further suggestions?

Thanks,

Bitdefender / scanner

Yep.
MissSherlock nailed it. It IS bitdefender causing the problem (for my hp officejet pro 8600 n911g on a Win10 Pro on Alienware 17r4).

This may be a dollar short and a day late but this is the prime reason for the scanning not to work.

You have to go into bitdefender and change some settings. Here is a good link:

I was LIVID  :mad::mad: when I discovered this problem recently after switching from norton/symantec. If it would not be censored, I'd use some of my saltier Marine Corps, ahhh, verbal barrage...

Good luck.
