i think you can download drivers for the 940 from drivers.com

So, does it matter if both systems have different drivers? The computer will have the XP version and my laptop will have the win 7. The only problem is that drivers.com won't pick up the printer because it is not directly connected to my laptop. Secondly, i was able to download the driver only to the laptop if it was directly wired to it. So i think i need to manually download the driver and apply it to the XP computer.:sarc: Also, one more problem, i cannot add or change the driver on my laptop. When i choose to add a different driver from the xp computer, it only gives me options for earlier versions of windows, like 2000, 98, etc.

only do the following if this statment is true
you have windows 7 on your pc the printer is connected to that via usb lead you are running xp on your laptop and whant to use the printer via network

delete the printer from your laptop make sure the printer is shered on the pc go to your laptop add printer brouse pick the printer then follow on screen prompts

If during the add printer process you select Windows Update, it will return an additional list of printers including the 930c. It will take upward of 10 minutes to get a response back from Windows update and during this time it seems like the Window is frozen but it is not. Be patient.

I'm a novice at this I can get to add printer, then add a printer if you don't have a USB port and to Windows update but it does not have in HP 930c. Can you please advise.

When you select Add a Printer

Select Local Printer

Then select use existing port and leave it at LPT1 for now.

Select next

Then select Windows update.

It will return an updated printer list that does have a driver for that printer.

Had the same problem with my P1000 - no driver. (The .enu package for XP from the HP website would not install - even after multiple attempts using various compatability settings. It would not find the printer.)
STEPS:
1. In "Devices and Printers" click "Add a printer"
2. Select "Add a local printer" - IGNORING the "only if you don't have a USB printer" (Trust me.)
3. Under the "Use and existing port" option, select "USB001 (Virtual printer port for USB)
4. Click "Next" then "Windows Update"
5. After a few seconds, the "HP Deskjet 930C/932C/935C" option will appear.
6. Highlight it and click "Next"
VOILA'! Yeah, it miffs me that the printer name and icon are not for my P1000, but hey, "the proof is in the printing"! And, using the menus, I can even clean my cartridge.
Thanks for the tip on the 930C - something I'd never have tried otherwise.
I'm running Win 7 Professional on a MacBook Pro in a Bootcamp partition. FYI, with 4 GB RAM it SCREAMS on PC games!

I tried following the above steps, but the printer is printing only blank pages. What do I need to do?

Nevermind. It's working now. I chose the wrong printer driver.

Note that I'm not suffering from the "phase" problem described earlier. All the text is crystal clear.

Hate to chime in just to whine, but I have tried all of the suggestions here (twice) to no avail. Even experimented with some other printer types, just to see. And now I have about six or seven driver packages I can't uninstall. It's going to be networked, so I am hoping a print server might help- this has worked for me in the past. But with 7, I am not optimistic.

A print server should work...I have a Photosmart P1215 connected to an HP JetDirect printer server via the parallel port cable and it works fine.

The same printer also works when I connect it to the main computer using a USB cable. The steps in post #1 will work. I think some of the other posters tried to make things more complicated than they really are...much of what was required to get a printer working in earlier versions of windows is not required with Windows 7. However, in this particular case, YOU MUST HAVE ACCESS TO THE INTERNET WHILE INSTALLING THE HP PHOTOSMART "P" SERIES PRINTERS.

1. Connect both the printer's power cord to a power outlet and a USB cable to a USB port on the computer. If the computer is not powered up, do so, log in and wait until the Windows 7 desktop is ready for input.

2. Click on start then click on "devices and printers" in the right-hand pane of the start window.

3. The Devices windows is divided into three panes. The top pane shows system devices, the middle pane shows installed printers (you won't see anything related to your P1000 here) and the bottom pane shows devices that are labeled "unspecified." You should see an icon for your P1000 in the bottom pane. If you do not, the printer is either improperly connected, not powered up or it or it's USB cable are defective. You can't go any further until you see your PhotoSmart P1000 printer represented in the bottom pane. On my system, the P1215 is represented by what appears to be an old "ice box" icon labeled "photosmart P1215"

4. If you see your P1000 in the bottom pane, right click anywhere in the window and select "add a printer."

5. Select "local printer."

6. select "use an existing port," then from the pull down menu select "DOT4_001 (Generic IEEE 1284.4 printing support). (I think this is where people get confused. The Photosmart "P" series printers are DOT4_001 devices). Click "next"

7. The "install printer driver" window will open. Click on the "Windows Update" button.

8. Wait. This takes awhile. When the list of available printers and drivers is populated, scroll down on the left pane and select "HP" (not Hewlett-Packard). On the right pane scroll down and select "HP DeskJet 970Cxi" (some other DeskJet drivers will also work, but the 970Cxi driver is the one I use). Click "next."

9. If you get a "which version of the driver do you want to use" window, click either button (doesn't matter)" then click "next".

10. In the next window, assign a name for the printer in the dialog box. Click "next."

11. You'll see the "installing printer progress bar. When it's finished, select "do not share this printer" (you can change this later, but let's get it working, first) and click "next."

12. Set the "default printer" box as desired, then click on the "print a test page" button. Report results. If successful click "finish."

13. You should now see a printer icon labeled whatever you assigned previously in the second pane of the devices window. You can right click on the icon to open the various options and properties menus. I use the DeskJet 970Cxi driver because it offers most of the print controls and options found with the native P1XXX series driver, but you may have to root around a bit to find a specific option.

14. You will not have access to the printer's card reader(s), if so equipped. Blame HP for not providing a native Windows 7 driver for this device. Also, it won't report the remaining ink levels (boo!). Everything else should work, and you should be able to select the printer from any other Windows print selection dialog.

Hey, this time it worked! Thanks again. Must have been making a consistent error. Or maybe a bad cable. I noticed though, the port was not listed as DOT4_001 but USB001. Just a name change?

Next task: setting it up on the network. I will see how far I get, but any advice appreciated.

New: It sees it on the network, but won't go. I read somewhere (here, probably) that the same driver that 7 uses has to be on the host machine, which is XP. OK, fine- but I can't just get the INF file, it wants to reinstall the printer on the host, and then can't detect it. Believe it or not, I used to do this professionally. The most common cry was always, "I can't print!)

Port: The P1XXX series are DOT4_ devices and Windows 7 should create a DOT4 port when it detects the device. Use the scroll bar in the port selection box and make sure you haven't missed it. You might also try unplugging the printer's USB cable, waiting 30 sec and then reconnecting. Check to see if a DOT4 port appears in the list. Otherwise, if USB001 is working....

Network: The printer has to work on the XP machine as a local printer before it can be shared as a networked device. So, if you haven't already done so, you have to install the XP driver package for the P1XXX on the XP machine. If you don't have the driver disc, you can still get the driver from HP. Don't try to install the Windows 7 printer driver onto the XP machine...it won't work and could possibly cause gastric discomfort in small animals in the vicinity.

Successful installation of a P1XXX series printer into Windows XP requires that you follow the instructions with some rigor, particularly the part where you start the process with the printer disconnected from the machine. If you don't do this, the result will be unpredictable and various printer functions may not be available.

Once the printer is working correctly as a local printer on the XP machine you can enable file and printer sharing and designate the P1XXX as a shared resource. That should make the printer available to the rest of the network and Windows 7 should find it without any additional steps. Printer sharing on XP can be tricky...be sure to review the XP help section on the topic and make sure the XP machine is correctly configured for sharing resources on the network.

Here's the deal: The P1000 is shared and has been with another XP machine for years. So I go to install as a network printer the 7 machine, but it sees it as a P1000 and then can't find a 7 driver, natch. And I can't find a loose *.inf file for it to be a 970 because "You don't need to! It's already installed on your system!" Thanks a bunch, Redmond.

I tried to remove and reinstall it on the XP machine as the 970Cxi, that should have done it- but XP would not recognize the printer as such. I seem to think that's the best approach.

I appreciate your interest and help in this issue, I know it's gotta be something simple I am missing, like usual, but I am new to 7. Thanks again!

Try creating an instance of the P1000 on the XP HOST using the 970Cxi driver. You'll end up with both the P1XXX driver and DeskJet 970Cxi pointing to the same device, but that won't matter. Windows 7 should find the DeskJet 970Cxi instance from the net.

I don't have XP installed anymore on any of the machines here, so I can't actually see what's happening. If this doesn't work we've reached the limit of my ability to help. Good luck.

Well, yeah! My problem was in trying to use HP's installer for the 970 on the XP- when I fell back and just used the native Windows driver I knew immediately it would work. I was not disappointed.
