A few years ago I threw out a perfectly good, expensive HP scanner.
Reason - no driver for new OS.
Looks like I need to throw my current HP scanner out now.
Again no driver for Win7. (or Vista)
Any advice/help would be appreciated.

Welcome to Seven Forums, Lugan.

I had the same problem with my HP Color LaserJet 2600n - no drivers on the distribution, and Windows 7 couldn't find any online.

I loaded in the drivers from the original CD, and them copied them to a folder. Then I ran the install again, and when it asked for the driver, I pointed it at the folder's ".inf" file.

Worked for me. You might want to try this. No guarantees, but I've found a lot of stuff that worked under XP works under Windows 7.

I just ran into a very similar problem with HP's PrecisionScan Pro software after installing Windows 7.

The scanner (HP Scanjet 7450C) appears normally in the Device Manager. It works properly using both a third party scanning application (VueScan) and the native scanning application in Nuance's Paperport. Niether uses a TWAIN interface. However, whenever PrecisionScan Pro starts, an error message is displayed stating "Sorry, the scanner could not be initialized (Scanner not found)".

Running PrecisionScan Pro in XP or Vista compatibility mode does not help. I have downloaded the Vista 64 bit driver from HP but it will not install. The install dialog states that the existing driver is a better driver.

I am certain this is a Windows 7 compatibility problem with the TWAIN drivers provided by HP.
It is important to for PrecisionScan Pro to work properly because it is used by Paperport and provides much functionality that is not available from the Paperport native scanning application.

HP stated they will not provide Windows 7 support or drivers for this scanner because it is not a current product. This is frustrating as there is nothing wrong with this scanner and an equivalent replacement is about $700.

I found a successful but unacceptable workaround by running Paperport and PrecisionScan Pro from a virtual instance of XP and installing the 32 bit version of W7 (instead of the desired 64 bit I originally installed). Under vitual XP Paperport is very sluggish and unstable but this does allow us to regain much of the productivity we lost by not having PrecisionScan Pro available.

Any help would certainly be appreciated.

Hi Lugan,
I had today the same problem with 5470c. Solved. I have installed Windows XP mode pack (download it at MS), then PrecisonScan with drivers. Then I ran it with rightclick through Troubleshoot compatibility (in my case WinXP SP2 as last working OS) and all works fine :)

Sorry to bump this old thread but my problem is relevant to this thread.
I have also tried to make my scanjet 5470c work with Windows XP mode but it doesn't work for me. The driver installs with no problem, but Windows XP still doesn't detect the scanner.

Please help me.

Hi readonly,Welcome to the forums, alot of people have had success using "Vuescan" VueScan Scanning Software for Windows 7, Mac OS X (Snow Leopard) and Linux give it a try you have nothing to lose ;)
Thanks for the welcome.

Epic fail for Vuescan which could not detect my scanner and on top of this I had to install unsigned drivers which one of the most dangerous operation you can do in a computer.

Software & Driver Downloads HP Scanjet 5470c Scanner - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

There is 1 firmware patch and 3 updates on this page.
If you are not using McAfees AV you won't need the first update.

You will need the other two updates and the firmware patch.

Mike
Thanks, but the updates are irrelevant for my problem, I don't need some features and I don't use McAfee. What I need is my scanner to be detected.

The firmware update fails to install as you could expect because my scanner is not detected in the first place.

Read Only , I would not say it's a dangerous operation to install unsigned drivers , basically all that means is the manufacturer has not paid Microsoft to digitally sign the drivers [quite expensive it appears] But back to your problem , would it not be more feasible to buy a new upto date scanner or an AIO printer they are "as cheap as chips" nowadays :)

That's exactly what HP want me to do, they don't release win7 driver to force us to by new scanner. I bought mine brand new less than 3 years ago and it does an incredibly good job especially for 3D objects scans. No way I'm gonna buy another one when the one I have is doing the job perfectly fine.

First I am very grateful that you are trying to help me, a thousand thanks!! :D

I checked this [sj664en.exe]

ScanJet 5300c/cse/cxi PrecisionScan software/driver - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

It says:

Compatibility: Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows 2000

No Vista 64bits mentioned, maybe I didn't get to the right page and file.
Can you link me to the Vista 64 compatible driver page please?

Hi scoutfu, If your friend is going to use 7-32bit then yes but if she intends keeping 64bit ,I'm afraid there are no drivers available :(
