I dumped my HP MFD and bought an Epson. Not as good (or expensive) but it works wth Win 7.
My HP laserjet MFD never did. It installed the Win 7 drivers when they fianlly came out, but then it would lose them periodicallyand tell me they had to be reinstalled.

The mouse took most research. I hate that click on the wheel, this one has the old fashioned smooth wheel. There aren't many about.
I think if need be i will set up a duel boot of XP and 7.

Its not my scanner, the person who owns it likes it a lot.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit installed. For about a month I have been searching for a way to make my hp scanjet 5470c work. Several days ago I read a response to this problem in another forum. The solution was to download a shareware program called FreeKapture, install it and the scanner should work. Having tried everything else that sounded resonable, I gave this a shot. Immediately Precision Scan Pro 3.1 and my scanner began to perform as it had for years in XP. When you start FreeKapture and click Scan a window comes up in which you need to select precisionscan pro. After that use precision scan as you have done in the past.

This worked for me and is a lot better than discarding a great scanner.

Sounds good and reasonable. Thanks will give it a try.
And yeah it's a great scanner, nowadays scanners are much badder especially for non flat objects so it would be insane to just throw it away.

HP Precision Scan 5470c and Windows 7 Professional x64 DOES WORK

1.) I installed Windoes Virtual PC
2.) start XP Mode
3.) in Virtual PC: Install Software from CD
4.) Un/plug USB-Cable
5.) in Virtual PC-Menu-Bar: USB: enable HP Scanjet 5400c Series
6.) Un/plug USB-Cable
7.) XP: --> new Hardware Found :-)

Seems like I had better quote the post I was referring to.

conjure's instructions work but I thought I would repost them with a little more clarity--

1.) Install Windows XP Mode and Virtual PC from Microsoft

2.) After installing, start XP Mode

3.) Unplug USB Cable from your scanner before running HP Pro install

4.) Select the CD/DVD drive (if installing from CD) and launch the HP Pro installer program from within XP Mode

5.) Plug in USB-Cable

6.) After HP Pro installation, click on USB tab at top of desktop in XP Mode. Choose Attach for the HP Scanjet 5400c Series

7.) XP Mode should find the new hardware and your scanner should be operational now!!

I'm posting this because over the years since we left MS XP behind there have been many many questions about loading the drivers for the HP ScanJet 5470c in the newer OS's. I've been seeking a solution for all those years and just found the simple, simple answer. Its so simple as to be embarrassing to all of us--being so smart as we all are! Anyway, I found it at How to Use HP Scanjet 5470C on Vista | eHow.com. It simply amounts to changing the security rights for 'all users' under the folder properies for the software to 'full'. Otherwise, everything is the same as XP driver load instructions. No hangups or mods needed under Windows 7 (32bit). Make the security mod after loading the driver, with Scanner USB connected and scanner turned on. After making the security change simply open the scanner software and go to work. Thought you all would like to hear the good news.

I tried the VM mode very messy you had to enable the USB drivers each time.

When installing the Drive you MUST down load the HP sj688 driver, mine would not install from the CD, it did once with a scripte error, I think I know why, you need to set it for XP Compatibility Mode this is not listed in the eHow.com article, I did it all again using the sj688 driver followed the instructions then set XP compatibility, as last I managed to get rid of my XP dual boot, the chap needs a medal for this as the HP Scanjet 5470c is a very good scanner.
