its plugged in. press the power button. nothing. no lights or noise. the power supply appears to be fine and its plugged in. has vista on it if that matters.

I hear something moving inside of it. perhaps a loose screw so thats not good news either. any thoughts on why its not starting?

thanks. :)

You can try with only AC adapter, then only battery.
Then try reseating HDD and RAMs, though those shouldn't cause what you describe. (At least it is free to try).

Ah, sorry hehe

The power button may have gone bad. Try unplug the front panel cables and short the power button pins with a screwdriver.

I believe you have already checked power cables to CPU and motherboard?

Try shorting, if you feel this as confusing, see if there are any Youtube videos about it.

Is there power to the CPU fan, anything at all on the monitor?

How do you know the PSU is okay? Did you test it? I'd swap in another.

If shorting the power button doesn't get power to it, then try replugging and reseating everything.

not sure how to check fan power. it's plugged in. nothing happens when power button is pressed. no lights no sound. nothing. now sure how to test the PSU. not sure where it's at on this model.

id like to short the power button but not sure how to do that. not sure where this is on the motherboard. I did connect a hard drive I know that works. no help there. the power cable works because it worked in my laptop. so I can rule out the power cable.

You will have to follow the cable from the power switch to the motherboard and see if anything similar to POWER SWITCH is written on the PCB. (It may not write anything since it is Compaq).
