Camera not recognised on HP Touchsmart

I've had my Touchsmart for 2 or 3 years now and have always used it with Google Photos (Picasa) to edit and upload. I initially used a Canon EOS 400D and a couple of years ago upgraded to a 7D. All have been working fine.

Last week I returned from holiday with around 1,000 photos on my camera and plugged the cable from my Touchsmart into the camera as normal, but, it didn't recognise the camera. It did make the little noise that a device makes when plugging something into a USB port, but would not see the camera. I looked in device manager to see if any flags were showing ofr USB issues, none were.

I restarted the Touchsmart, still the same. I removed the two external HDD's so that the camera was the only thing connected, still the same , I tried the cable from the camera in all 6 USB ports, the same. I tried another cable, the same. I then tried a card reader with the CF card in it, initially the same. Then I had odd problems with the PC recognising it as an external drive but showing some odd characters in the view, but as soon as I tried to access it the drive disappeared.

I looked to see if there was a specific driver for the 7D but there was not, so I downloaded the Canon EOS utility s/w and tried to see if that recognised the camera but it didn't.

I then popped the CF card back into the camera to find that the camera was now showing the card as blank; you can imagine how I felt thinking that I'd lost 7 days of holiday photos! I tried it back on the Touchsmart again and it was the same, so I took a couple of photos and they now played back on the camera but that was all that was showing on there. I accepted that I had lost them all.

As a last resort I plugged the camera into my wife's Asus W8 laptop, and it recognised the camera and I downloaded them to her laptop, then used a HDD to get them across to mine.

I then formatted the CF card in my camera and tried again in the Touchsmart, still wouldn't recognise it. So, I ordered a new CF card. That arrived today, I took some photos in the garden, plugged the camera into the Touchsmart, and you guessed it, it still doesn't recognise it. I tried plugging in the card reader and it shows as an external drive, but as soon as I plug the CF card into it, it goes from the view.

So, I'm hoping that someone out there can help as I don't want to have to go through the process of loading photos onto my wife's laptop, copying them to a HDD, then loading them onto my Touchsmart every time I have photos to process.

I originally posted this on a HP Support Forum but the only response was to phone HP Support!

Hello and welcome botty mate have you tried using a different cable to plug the camera into the machine. Now I ask because maybe the port/s you are plugging it into may not be making very good contact at the connection.

The other suggestion I might make is to use an adaptor to plug that card into the machine much the same way as I do with the SD cards I use with my cameras. this would avoid having to lug the camera in at all and avoid anything glitches that are or maybe going on between camera and machine.

From experience most of the large manufacturers ie HP and as recently with myself - Asus the support is pretty weak if and when you can get through.

Just for the record a Google shows me this type of card is now quite old and I am sure an SD one would be better if it fits because as you say as soon as you plug that card into the machine it goes blank for what reason I am not sure.

Now you could try running these just in case the Windows system is out of whack
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2

now if those do no good then run these - just in case because at very least they will eliminate a few things and take no time to run

ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with the malware scans
(NB If one is running Kaspersky security it may rant about ADW - just ignore it or disable Kaspersky while the ADW is being used)

Hi, many thanks for the reply.

I've tried a couple of different cables but to no avail, and also used card reader. The weird thing is that when I do that it shows the card reader as a removable drive, but as soon as I plug the CF card in, it goes from view. I have to use the CF card as it's standard on the EOS 7D as it was with most higher end DSLR's.

I've run various virus and spyware/malware checks, I do them weekly 'just in case', I will try those system checks that you have listed.

I'll let you know how I get one, and thanks again.

Hmm well I suppose it might be worth trying it with a new card as the old one being put in is what is causing the drop out though why I really am at a loss to say why.
