Hurricane Season USA

It seems like every area of the US has some type of disaster for that region. I was trying to think, what does Arizona, New Mexico have? Aren't they pretty "disaster free"?

New Mexico is a good choice because you can choose from several climate zones. Another option for a moderate climate is probably Maine - except for the cold winters.

I grew up in Florida; hurricanes are just part of the landscape like earthquakes on the west coast, tornadoes in tornado ally, and blizzards in the northern tier of states. I wouldn't trade the hurricanes for the blizzards.

I don't know, February had a record for snow fall this year in Ohio. I quite enjoyed it.

With Florida the summers are always rainy and incredibly unbearable due to the heat and humidity. The winters you have "season" which is where all the "snow birds" come down and clog up traffic and cause accidents. You also have all the dry heat in the winter, which means a LOT of brush fires. I recall one time Alligator Alley was shut down for a couple days due to those fires. Soon those beaches on the west coast are going to be destroyed. There's also lots of crime from the illegal immigrant problem in Florida. They bring drugs, prostitution, rape, robbery and murder.

Let's not forget the bugs! First house I lived in (Lehigh Acres) we always had huntsman spiders, brown widows and black widow spiders. Second house wasn't so bad but the third house I rented I had a ghost ant infestation. I had to use Ant Kil with boric acid to get rid of them.

If I never see snow again, I will not be sad. For me, Florida gives me the opportunity to ride year round. I am not a winter person.

By the way, I lived in Buckingham for ten years on the Orange River. Loved it.

I was sad for the 3 years I lived in Fort Myers. A Christmas isn't the same without snow (or at least cold) for the season. I remember people putting up all types of Christmas decorations on their front yards. Seeing a snow man next to a palm tree doesn't exactly create the proper picture. The Christmas holiday was always depressing in Florida. It was the first time in my life that I faced having to deal with depression.

Then of course Lee County was one of the highest in foreclosure rate in (ranked 4th total) in US in 2009, even worse in 2008. What does that mean? People leaving, losing their jobs and higher crime. It was so bad that after Obama was elected he made a trip to Fort Myers to address it: Obama pushes stimulus plan in hard-hit Fort Myers - CNN.com

Don't get me wrong, Florida is a nice vacation spot but that's about it. I also loathed having to pay over double my car insurance compared to when I lived in Ohio. Only one good thing left in Florida for me and that is my daughter.

It is all in what you are used to. As a second generation native Floridian, snow and cold weather have no relationship to Christmas for me. And having spent considerable time in the tropic, Christmas does not equal snow.

No Christmas song applies to Florida. No snowmen outside, no snow angels, no sleigh rides, no frost on the windows, no icicles, no snowflakes, no sitting by a fireplace, no drinking hot chocolate with marshmallows, no real pine/fur trees (they are imported from out of state and die quickly in Florida heat) and no reindeer.

All you have are beaches, spiders, alligators, palm trees, love bugs (see attached), frogs, air conditioning, ghost ants, brush fires, bad traffic and illegal immigrants. That just screams the traditional Christmas holiday season. :sarc:

Edit- Note that I am being sarcastic in all of this. Don't take offense.

Actually Florida does have a native pine that makes fairly nice Christmas trees, Sand Pine. As the name indicates they grow on the sand ridges of Central and North Florida and the panhandle. We used to cut our own. If we happened to be in the state for Christmas when my kids were growing up, we kept the tradition of cutting our own alive.

Oh, and most of those songs are meaningless to me. They aren't about real Christmas; they only apply to the figid northern wastelands.

I think the History channel has been smoking too much. Must have found some strange plants and tried them out. If they could kill a hurricane it would of been done long ago, considering the amount of death and destruction these storms cause.

There are two History Channels. One is just plain History Channel which has good solid history on it. The other one, History Investigates, has some pretty weird stuff on it. Today there was one about the giant birds that were sighted in the USA in the 1970's. Just off the top of my head, I don't remember those. I just had to record that show and see what it was all about.

I'm in the Tampa Area (northern suburbs) so we are watching this current "depression". But, this is generally early early in the season for something to form and affect the Tampa area. Late August into mid September is the "prime" season for us.

However Murphy's Law applies and something could brew up and hit this area at any time.

I've lived in Biloxi Ms (Keesler AFB) and been through several there in the early 60's (nothing like the major Hurricanes that have hit that area).

My older brother is a first reponder for FEMA on these disaters. He is still doing repairs in the Galveston/Houston area from Ike. He tells me they estimate anywhere form 12 to 16 major Hurricanes this season so lets pray their wrong with all that oil in the gulf the last thing they need is to have it blown all over the place.
