I am having a problem with my new/used laptop

Normly when the X shows up on the wifi icon there is no internet connection. But the wifi connection is working fine. I am typing this reply on my laptop with the X still there. And my tablet and cell phone connect to the wifi also just fine. By the way I did a hard reset on the router already, no change.

RE: Red X on Wireless Network Connection Icon. I don't know much about that. I've seen it myself a few times in the past and resetting the router via the hard reset button usually fixes it for me along with a reboot. However there have been times when I needed to rewire the master socket. Check DNS and try changing to something else.

As I've said already I have seen the same thing happen on my machine. Resetting router and changing DNS along with a reboot has always fixed it for me. Did you try this?

It's also possible that the Red X is displayed because of icon cache corruption resulting in the wrong icon being displayed in the system tray.

You might want to reset and clear notification area icons and cache.

Then you'll need to reconfigure notification area:

I did go through everything bellow as far as Securitys. The next screen is grayed out. See the screen capture bellow.



Symptoms –

• Red X on the network icon (by time on taskbar)
• Still able to go to the internet

Click “Start or orb”
Run or Search box
type “dcomcnfg” and hit enter
Find: Component Services-Computers-My Computer-DCOM Config-netprofm
Right click “netprofm”
Click on “Properties” select “Security”

Navigate to “Launch and Activation Permissions” section changed to “Customize”
Click “Edit”
Click “Add..” Type “LOCAL SERVICE” as the object names then click “OK”
In “Permissions for LOCAL SERVICE”, select “Allow” for “Local Launch” and “Local Activition” Click “OK”, Click “OK”
Reboot

I have no idea why those settings are greyed out. Are you using a user account with admin rights?

Click on the Start Button and type in the box at the bottom = Device Manager = and hit your Enter Key. If you see any Yellow Exclamation Marks in it, then there is a problem that needs correcting.

I don't have a clue eather. Yes my user account has full admin rights.

Actually I do know why they are greyed out - I think. It's been a while since I applied settings on my machine so I had forgotten that initially they were greyed out for me also.

In the case where it is greyed out – On the general tab, you will see the Application ID. Write this down. Now open up regedit.
Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AppID\the app id
Right click on the key
Permissions
Advanced
Ownership – Change to the Administrator
Click Apply and OK
Give the Administrator Full Control
Close out the registry
