Hi All

I wonder whether anybody can help me with this problem.

I am currently running Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit, and using a Netgear Wireless-N 150 Modem Router. I use Internet Explorer.

There are currenly 17 Windows updates waiting to be installed. The problem is that when installed I am unable to connect to the internet. The only solution that I have found is to do a system restore and remove the updates.

Is this a problem caused by the updates inhibiting the router?

Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Nick

I am having the exact same problem. I asked the window support team, but weren't much help. I've had to turn off my automantic updates because I got so tired of having to do a system restore.

Please, if anyone knows how to fix this, much help would be apprieciated.

I can't promise it will work but you can try below:

1.Uninstall all 3p security software
2.Disable all add-ones in IE and reset IE,reset winsock and other (details in the links -especially in the second one are very good advices)

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1018-internet-explorer-enable-disable-toolbars-extensions-add-ons.html

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/89919-troubleshooting-internet-explorer-issues.html
(apply everything what is in this tutorial)

3.Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges (right click on cmd.exe as administrator)
and type:

netsh winhttp reset proxy

+ restart

4.Open device manager,go to network adapters section and make sure there are not any error with any card or any virtual device.Post screenshot if you find any error.Event if there is no errors in network adapters section then disable for the moment your network card and re-enable it again

5.Reset HOSTS file to defaults by using this one MS Fix it ->Microsoft Fix it 50267

If really nothing help I have questions

1.Does ping command work? e.g

ping google.com

2.Are you absolutely sure your computer is not infected?
Check it by using e.g this one Malwarebytes

Prepare log from SilentRunners CLICK (right click on link and choose "Save As",this is vbs script),log attache to post.

Sometimes it is as simple as an update just D/L wrong. Do a system restore, but don't use the Updates that have already D/L. Get rid of those and hit your Win Key and get fresh updates.

Hi Nick and welcome sevenforums.

We are going to have to fire some shots which may miss the mark, but we will get you there.

First, I'd like for you to run the system file checker.

Please, please read the following tutorial.

System File Checker - SFC /SCANNOW Command

Keep runnng sfc until you get a clean bill of health from sfc.

If that doesn't solve the problem, then:

disable and remove your present av/firewall software and install and use the av of choice of most of us here, namely, MSE - Microsoft Security Essentials

If you still have problems, let us know. We still have plenty ammo left.

Remove Norton

The problem you are describing exactly matches the issues a co-worker was having after last weeks updates. He has an HP i7 of some sort with Windows 7 64-bit. After appying the latest updates, IE and Firefox would not connect to the internet. Thing live Windows update, email, ping, virus updates, etc still worked however.

The only solution he found was remove the Norton anti-virus utilities. Simply uninstalling them from the control panel was not sufficient though. He had to download a removal tool from Norton's website. Once that was done, Windows updates quit breaking internet connectivity.

He has now switched to Microsoft Security Essentials instead.

Thanks to those who answered this thread. I have now removed Norton and, so far so good. All outstanding MS updates have been installed and I have no connection problems. I am running MS Security Essentials until I sort out some other AV software.

You can't go wrong with MSE. Most of us use MSE. You can't do better.
