Okay, this is going to be difficult for me to explain because I'm not very tech savvy but I'm going to do my best. Anyways I'm on windows 7 64 bit I remember years ago an update came out that was practically forcing people to install windows 10 I did everything in my power to make that not happen. But I noticed I haven't been getting any window updates going all the way back to 2016!! they just stopped. I'm going to post some screenshots of the dilemma I’m experiencing

Imgur: The magic of the Internet

As you can see I still can't get any updates unless I download windows 10... I mentioned earlier that there was a way around this in the past but it isn't working for me anymore unless I’m doing something wrong, in the next screen shot I show how it won't allow me to make a specific update hidden the hidden option won't come up anymore only view details and copy details... I've tried doing it as administrator and that won't work either

Imgur: The magic of the Internet

In this other screen shot I'm displaying the option I've had for my windows updates for the last few years it's been the second option but yesterday I tried the other three options and nothing changed I still can't check for other updates or hide the windows 10 update that (I STILL DO NOT WANT).

When I attempt to let the update go through it tells me 12 things are being loaded I'm under the assumption that if I allow for that update to finish I'll have windows 10 the next time the computer restarts.

With the total End of support for Windows 7 fast approaching I would suggest that you start by looking at some other users, comments and suggestions Here ... What should we do after January 2020

Hi Negaforce.

Before we do anything please make a back-up image, most here use macrium

now follow these instructions

Reset your WU option to CHECK FOR UPDATES ONLY

Click Start, and then type regedit in the Start Search box.
In the Programs list, click regedit.exe.
Locate and then select the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS
Right-click COMPONENTS.
Click Export.
In the File Name box, type COMPONENTS.
In the Save in box, click Desktop, click Save, and then save the file to your desktop.
In the details pane, right-click PendingXmlIdentifier, and then click Delete. If this value does not exist, go to the next step.
In the details pane, right-click NextQueueEntryIndex, and then click Delete. If this value does not exist, go to the next step.

Hi Negaforce,

Welcome to SevenForums!

torchwood has given you excellent advice, please do as he has recommended, especially creating a system image prior to doing anything!

If that works and gets rid of the nagging Win 10 update you should be able to download and install the Win 7 updates! There have been many many updates since 2016. You will have to decide on whether you are going to install the cumulative [Monthly Rollup] update or the monthly [Security-Only] updates [plus others of course]!

WU can take hours to download and install updates, including all the restarts needed. There are a couple of quicker and preffered alternatives available when you get to that stage. If you want more information on that then please let us know.

I hope this helps!

Hey, I'm not sure if I'm replying the proper way here because I'm new and don't really know what I'm doing lol

I'm wondering if this information you provided me with would still be applicable? I somehow got the nerve to just let the update go through but when the computer restarted I didn’t have windows 10 instead I had a few other updates and some that (keep failing for some reason). Anyways I thought that was odd but the issue persists I still can't check for any windows updates because every time I attempt to do so I get this message that states.. I'm just going to post a link to the screenshot of what it says below.

I thought it was the windows 10 update that was causing the inability for me to check for updates now I'm not so sure if it is...

No, I haven't yet to be honest I'm not sure how, I've never made a system image before I suppose it's something similar to a system restore or backup I'll definitely make one before doing any of the aforementioned things listed but I'm still curious if windows 10 is even what's causing that problem now.

I have it set to install updates automatically so I'm noticing that it's starting to download updates even though it won't allow me to check for them.. but like I said before half of the updates are failing and I have no idea why look at that screenshot only 1 was successful: Imgur: The magic of the Internet

You should have . . .

torchwood has given you excellent advice, please do as he has recommended, especially creating a system image prior to doing anything!

You will NOT be able to go back to the OS state prior to installing the Win 10 update!

For information purposes, a system image creates an exact copy of the OS [on an external HDD] as it was when the system image was made. This way, if things go wrong, you will be able to restore the OS back to the exact same state that it was when the system image was made in a very short time. There are two imaging programs which are very popular among members here, the first is AOMEI Backupper Standard [FREE], and the second is Macrium Reflect [FREE].

I hope this helps!

Hi All,

Got a sneaky feeling that the update i quoted "for further reading" MIGHT have been auto installed by MS as the free option route has been withdrawn.

Need to know what KB's are currently being offered.

Hi @Snick,

Bill what i meant was that the direct update route from W7, via the W10 KB(GWX), has been recinded, hence my comment about the auto install of the "over-ride" KB.

Hi @Negaforce,
have a read of this, especially the user guide, and install it if your sceptical about following my instructions.
It was used by many people, myself included, when the nag Kb was released.
