I found the xbox one reveal a REAL turn off so ..........

The problem is all these companies keep trying ridiculous anti piracy methods that barely slow down the pirates (if at all) and cause legitimate consumers problems. I would be far more willing to deal with crazy DRM measures if they actually worked at all, but they don't.

Now they want to stack targeted advertising and impulse buying to their list on top of the DRM problem they refuse to address at all. Basically I'm down to only gaming on pc. I actually got an Xbox controller for it so ports would play more smoothly. I'm also pretty much exclusively on steam now as it's been the only DRM that seems to actually function without interfering with my game experience.

The Steam box may wind up taking some market points against the odds because of how all this is playing out.

Games get pirated even a couple or few days the game is even released so I doubt very much their DRMs are working, all they do is hinder and annoy the crap out of the paying customer. Even Console games are pirated now.

Now, being said that, just because they have paid Millions of Dollars to a Lobbyist to call what they sell Legal does not mean it is. I don't consider an unoptimized, shoddy and badly coded ported to PC game legal at all... what happened to buying a finished product?

My take on this... if they think they can get away with the sale of used games, watch how many more games get pirated now. :(

There is another aspect to DRM.

It may mean you have to pay again to use the game on another machine/platform, even if you already bought it. Maybe that is the real trick they are up to.

The thing is the pirates are composed of several generations of guys/girls that have been doing this their entire adult lives and maybe longer. The only way to ever slow them down is via cloud computing. Which I also think is a really big mistake, everyone is getting caught up in it without considering the long term effects of it. The thing is no matter how fancy the drm is, as long as the have access to the application they'll eventually hack it. Even the most stringent of DRM measures right now have slowed them down by a week at best. Sometimes pirated copies are available before games even release.

I purchase a lot of games on steam and apps from various places all over the net. DRM or lack thereof was never a concern until the last 6 or 7 years, when it actually started interfering with my experience.

Cloud computing is a trap, warns GNU founder | Technology | guardian.co.uk
That article kind of touches on the concerns I have in the area of cloud computing.
...and with adobe moving photoshop to a cloud based subscription only service a lot of other companies will likely start trying to follow suit.

What you see on pc is usually test grounds for what you will see later in the smaller more portable/dedicated devices. So it's not two different subjects either.

I hear all the against arguments and I agree.

Xbox was awesome, the 360 had a money grab taint. This thing is an acknowledged cash cow.

However there is one compelling for argument - Forza. One of the rare games that get better with each release.

I've actually taken to playing racing games on my pc with a 360 controller (pretty much the only thing I use it for) Grid 2 is actually a really good racing game, depending on difficulty and settings it can either be a arcade style racing game, or a very demanding sim. The forza games are good but it's getting to where there are equally good games available on steam. The only downside is the need for a controller, mouse and keyboard just don't work for real racing games, you have to have more control over acceleration level and turning than the keyboard really allows.

I use my fanatec wheel for racing and the amount of PC titles that are great with a wheel are increasing.

If Forza dropped it's exclusivity I would not consider a X1.

How does Steam which is cloud based but allows you to download games to you PC affect the quality of the experience, IMO it makes it better as you have a central hub and you can re download later.

So when you say cloud gaming it means that the actual software is saved in the cloud and never downloads to your device?

I do understand that steam isn't the only way to buy games, but doesn't Steam make their games secure as you need to be connected to the web. While I understand this does nothing if you can get them on other mediums.

Just to go slightly off topic how many of the top games are not available from Steam and what is you personal opinion of Steam and why?

Well done SONY!!!!

Maybe MS will learn not to manipulate and control their users.

That applies to windows 8 as well.

Can somebody bring out another os that can replace windows? It needs to be software that does not seek to control and manipulate the users.

Perhaps this is the encouragement that will get us there.

At this point I am skeptic at both, the only difference here is that one was dumb enough to say it first and the other one just said the opposite because they know it will win them some brownie points... will PS4 be like Google where it will hide the truth until someone discovers it and then starts the backpedaling?

I am not worry all that much since I don't game on Consoles but my kids do and they are both going towards the PS4 because of those youtube videos... I told them that unless we are sure they are not coming in my house with either one of them... we will give it its due time before I decide whether they can buy it or not, even if they do it with their own money.

I have no issue with steam, steam is not cloud computing as I said before.
I have a ridiculous number of games on steam and it's a great system.
That said they still actually give me the software/games I purchase and just offer a central download point to do so.
What we are starting to see the beginnings of now not with steam but with other things, is where they don't actually even give you the software.
The idea is that you can NOT purchase it. It must basically be rented as a service until the end of time once this happens. This idea, combined with microtransactions and impulse buys, is basically meant to just plain nickle and dime you do death over time.
I think it's dishonest and I don't see any benefit had to any end user because of it.

That is a microtransaction yes. Many games now pop up a little alert to purchase right at the exact moment you need it as well, which is what I mean by impulse buying. Once they have your CC info and all, all you have to do is click a little yes button, impulse buys are drastically more likely to happen that way and they know this.

The cloud is only just now really starting to concern me on the heels of adobe's announcement concerning the next photoshop, which will only be available under a contract monthly subscription and you will not be able to purchase it. In fact photoshop should be disappearing from what shelves it remains on in the next couple of months here.

Hi guys , now more info has come out about the PS4 ( I know I started the thread about the xone but hey-ho ) I must say it gives me a little hope for the future of console gaming , it seems Sony are actually making a 'games console' not a ..... well what-ever the xbox one is supposed to be because it sure isn't what I'd call a games console it's nearly every thing but. Sony are allowing used games sales and you don't need an internet connection to use the console which is great news for consumers, I think anyway.
I still want to get a gaming rig but I need to get some more penny's saved up first but this thread has helped me out in learning about what's important in a gaming rig , so thanks guys .
When I do get a gaming PC I'm looking forward to using Steam because it looks like when the Steam sales are on there are some good deals to be had.
