I get a random mic sound despite not having a mic plugged in.

Every so often there's a noise as though someone is putting down a mic, the sort of muffled clunk. I don't have anything running up front that would do that nor in the background, it's not particularly annoying but I'm afraid it may be some sort of root-kit or a connection with someone I didn't authorize.

No, but I have heard the sound that makes, like the old dial tone or when a line is busy. That beeping isn't close to the noise it's making.

Go to your sound icon down in the task bar and right click and choose sounds and see what is enabled under the various tabs. See if you have devices enabled that don't need to be.

I've tried this, and in fact disabled everything but the main sound output. I may turn that off just to be 100% sure it isn't an outside device.

Edit: I disabled it and, as expected, it disappeared. Once enabled the sound came back at random intervals as per usual.

Well I guess you found your mysterious issue just keep it disabled until you need it if it bugs you enough.

Sigh, well you have been trying to help so I'll bite my tongue and keep back most of the sarcasm.

Even if it did annoy me so much that I'd think about disabling it eternally, I would then be unable to hear anything at all. Having to jump through hoops every time I whimsically felt like watching a youtube video or listen to music by enabling it once again, and disabling it as soon as I was finished, and even then during that time I would have to hear the clanks interrupt the said music/video.
Your suggestion was a mere work around rather than a solution and neither was it what worried me nor particularly cared for.

I wasn't trying to be funny or not offer a solution to the fact that you may have some interference with your recording and outputs on your computer. Just merely trying to get some info on the issue at hand..
