i hate w10.

Any time you buy Windows 7 at 1/4 of the normal cost, you can pretty much figure it is a counterfeit.
People have been selling counterfeit Windows on eBay for years. When they are kicked off eBay they just start another account and start selling again.

EXCEPT as I already stated... I have clearly have LEGIT CDs(32bit and 64bit) and a COA Sticker so I don't know how they could still be "counterfeit" ..

for the first one that had already been used too many times.. ie I had spoken to a MS rep that time the key was legit but already used so I got a dud...:mad:

but for the "COA SLP product key" I received as the replacement key... not as legal as should be.. but a LEGIT key that worked... :(:sarc::confused:

as for the price... its possible the seller didn't know how much to sell them for and settled on $73.99
I am more concerned to pay a very high price like around $300 and get ripped off...:cry: then a mid ranged price I did pay...

as for the COA Sticker I payed for... I don't have a camera or smart phone so I cannot do a photo for you to see...

I've received two Windows 8 Pro sealed packages with both x64 and x86 media, and I've paid $60 for the first and later, $40 for the second copy. Both Legit and I've only activated the first. So it is possible to get.

To me (even though it is the retail cost), paying over $100.00 for a copy of Windows in horrendous.

I'm glad to be here, and will likely be back to Windows 7 Pro this weekend. It's not so much that I hate Win 10, as it is the lack of control I have over it. I'm a Win 7 gal, and frankly, I'm still in search of the newest, least intrusive OS, fully aware those days are gone.

I'm on 10 now, but only because I sent my laptop in for repairs (a new HD), and I think the tech thought he was doing me a favor by installing it, so I'm checking it out (I've since learned that any Win 8 install automatically gets updated when using Asurion warranty services). If I can't get Win 10 tricked up with the same freedom and ease as my husband experiences with his Ducati 750, I will be removing it this weekend.
Sure, it's pretty, but I have major issues with control, and if I pay for something - &*!%@#@ - I want it to do what I want it to do.There was a time when purchasing a product, you were asked if you wanted a particular feature. If you wanted it, you clicked or pressed something, giving permission. NOW, you have to commit to spending a month minimum finding and turning stuff off, and wondering whether what you press or click on actually does the opposite! (Yes, Margaret, there is no Santa Claus, and Microsoft does set up certain buttons/controls that totally ignore your permissions).
I just don't get how people are okay with the level of intrusiveness we've allowed these "Silicon Slut Monsters" to put on consumers, and what makes me really ill, is every company and institution has followed suit, because we've helped them prove time and time again, that we'll take anything if it's shoved down our throats often enough, long enough and with the impression of it being "free."

I've been rolling my eyes at Microsoft's messages that tell you what you stand to lose access to, if you "turn off, uninstall or delete" any app. A month ago, my friend was in a state of panic over whether to uninstall something that would limit her use of Skype. I asked her if she had Skype before Win 10, why would she now resign her account to be controlled by Win 10? She thought about it, uninstalled the app, and guess what? No flies are swarming around her house, there's no blood running out of her bathroom sink, and no one is spitting green goo across the room (Yes, Margaret, the demon in the film "The Exorcist" is a petulant child compared to the "Legion" of apps taunting me in Win 10).

I've been playing with Win 10 for two days now, and I'm already tired of it. To date, here's what I need to remove before deciding whether to keep it or not:
CORTANA
EDGE
DRMs (BAKED IN, ITUNE, AMAZON, ETC.)
INVOLUNTARY UPGRADES/UPDATES
WINDOWS STORE (It's where their updates come from, now that most of us have learned how to turn it off)
ANY AND ALL APPS THAT CANNOT BE REMOVED(I don't own or use an "Xbox," "Groove," and I don't play Microsoft's games. This means that there is no moat between the new laptop owner and the third-party seller partnering with Microsoft).

I don't know a lot about the inner workings of computers, but I do know when I'm being duped and dumped on by these guys, and I resent it almost as much as the people who love saying things like, "It's here, get used to it" "What's the big deal? Don't use it!" "I use it all the time, and it's makes things so much easier." Oh brother.

All I want is to get what I pay for, and if I have to take some 'bloat' to get it, fine, but once I purchase and take it home, I want to be able to take it off without worrying about sneaky attachments set to turn my laptop to a brick the moment I question its importance. So, I'm here to learn what exactly can or can't be down with this OS, because I've been on for two days now, and I'm already sick of it.

Jody, although windows 8 is not supported, Windows 8.1 is still fully supported, so there's no retro effect on prices ( it's now rare so let's charge more ;) ).

There is the other unfortunate factor with windows 8 that also has an effect on prices, Very few people got on with it when it was released and most only changed when it was re-launched as 8.1

I understand that you are "stuck" where you are due to hardware issues but 8, and even 8.1 never had the appeal that Win7 had / has

Hey ItAintBroke, nice first post :D ooh that passion...

I took one look at Win10 one time while installing a favored game( Unreal Tournament 2004) on his new PC bought from BestBuy.. for a friend and was like ICK... Among those, crappy UI, and the loss of time worn features I had come to rely on and the location of said features... to the fat that said game would not fully load... do to Win10 being NEW with lack of support for a lot of older programming.. like DirectDraw which as I understand it is mostly no longer supported..

I will never use Win10, M$ could NOT pay me to UPGRADE TO IT! lol :p
so its Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64 F.O.R.E.V.E.R.! lol :D

I understand that you are "stuck" where you are due to hardware issues but 8, and even 8.1 never had the appeal that Win7 had / has
yes appeal, M$ got something right with Win7

Thanks Melchior! Consumer rights have been chipped away at an alarming speed since Steve Jobs showed the world that the consumer will take whatever's given to them. It's the nature of business, but now computer manufacturers have taken the idea of "supply and demand" to mean, "THEY" supply to the consumer what they deem necessary, and "THEY" demand we thank them for it. It's a tired topic, but I guess I come from a generation that's been watching this for a long time, and honestly, I'm not excited about the future.

Windows 1 Forever
Windows 2 Forever
Windows 3 Forever
Windows 3.1 Forever

I've seen this included in a couple of posts in this thread, and I must point out it is not historically accurate. For those of us building and running PCs in the '89 - '90s timeframe it was:

 • DOS 3.3 (33Meg Partition Size Limit, 1M of RAM was more than you would ever use and cost $400)
 • DOS 4.1 (Yay! I can use the whole 120Meg drive in a single-partition)
 • Windows 286
 • Windows 386
 • Windows 3.0 (Yes with Trumpet Winsock)
 • Windows 3.1 (Yes, still installed on 1.44M floppies, Word 1.0f came out here)
 • ...
There may have been something codenamed Windows1 or Windows2, but you didn't see those in boxes.

How strange that you use old calculator like the one in Windows 7 as an example. So this Windows 7 Calculator is "eye candy" to you:

View attachment 398955

... and this, Windows 10 Calculator is "generic vanilla - yuk":

View attachment 398956
(Screenshot shows native Windows 10 Calculator in build 16199.)

I have to say I totally disagree!

Kari

It is not the 'eye-candy' that is the point (I also note you chose standard as opposed to programmer mode). It is a usability night-mare to those trying to work on smaller screens like laptops, etc.. Notice the HUGE difference in screen real-estate the Win10 web-ized monstrosity requires compared to the properly sized Win7 counterpart. (where there was actually thought put into the needed size, as opposed to just how the heck it manages to render itself on screen X). That was the point in "what has been lost" in addition to the polish, it is actual thought put into managing screen real-estate that has suffered.

I can use either, one sits nicely in the corner and doesn't obscure what I need it for, the other takes up 25% of my screen forcing me to alt-tab back-and-forth to do the same thing. That goes directly to 'usability' and a lack of 'human-factors' understanding from an efficiency standpoint. That is what I hope is addressed in the future after this experiment in cross-platform UI design settles down. (and maybe thow some eye-candy for the window decore :p)

It is not the 'eye-candy' that is the point.

You specifically used Calculator as an example of vanilla "yuk" looks:

But this is about the looks. Win10 is fine if your the type that doesn't mind every application looking like a generic vanilla web-page -- but yuk. just compare it calculator to previous releases is about as good an example as any. Don't get me wrong, I don't want form over function, but when we have had stunning form for over a decade in desktop look, Win10 is somewhat of a let down and feels like a big step backwards in user-interface design.

When I proved you wrong, you are trying with this one:

(I also note you chose standard as opposed to programmer mode).

That went wrong, too! If you want me to use Programmer mode Calculator as an example, here it is:

2017-05-25_19h45_17.jpg

Windows 7 Programmer Calculator on left, minimum size 164,124 pixels (423 * 388). Windows 10 Programmer Calculator on right, 160,000 pixels used (320 * 500). You lost again :)

BTW, as W10 Calculator in programmer mode is almost 25% narrower than W7 one, it sits much nicer on corner of small displays. With less "screen real-estate" used.

Trying to save you from one more embarrassing argument: please do not post now about how you meant unit conversion mode instead of programmer mode as in that mode the W7 Calculator loses even more:

Tried Win 10 For One Week, Went Back to Win 7

I couldn't do it. It just pissed me off too much having Win 10 in my home, on my computer. I spent a whole week trying to modify the software to minimum invasiveness, but for every two things I uninstalled, there ten files that required even more research before determining its true function. I'm telling you, I've never seen so much bloat within a Windows program, not to mention the arrogance in some of the names they've used, reminding the user that they had no control over their intrusiveness.

Well, yesterday, while bingeing the 7th season of "The Walking Dead" I installed a home version of Win 7 (my version of Drano), went for a clean install, then upgraded to Win 7 Pro, and life has been good ever since. No, I don't trust Win10 recovery/reinstall settings. If they have become so bold as to hide their intrusiveness in plain sight, who knows what could be left behind when installed using their methods? It's insane. I will admit I have a much better handle on Microsoft's intrusion with Win7, but it does require staying on top of it. Saturdays are my days to do that.

I'm staying with Win7, because I am convinced there are too many people who are pushing back, and at some point Microsoft will have to make some choices, and so will the consumer. In the meantime, I don't my version of Windows on the internet. I know it's crazy, but I need to protect my content, and right now, their "Trusted Installer" seems to be working more for them and less for me.

It'd be real interesting to know how many of Microsoft's people actually hang out here, reading taking notes. Sure, they could be surveying for the purposes of making a better product, but with the consumer on one side of the fence, and Microsoft, Google and all the third-party peons on the other side, there's no question as to whom they're making a better product for, and to whom it will hurt in the long run.

No it didn't, you did. You screwed it by dual-booting with Ubuntu which places the GRUB boot loader in a higher priority that the Windows loader. When you tried to roll back to Windows 7, it got confused about where to write the Windows boot loader. Thus you ended up with a corrupted master boot record - a classic 0x7E BSOD.

Next time to post a BSOD thread, read the instructions - that way you might get a quicker reply.

BSOD after downgrade. (0x0000007E) - Windows 7 Help Forums

I know this is a late reply. Sorry.

Not sure if you yourself read the BSOD posting instructions, but if you do you see it requires running a program. Tell me, how was I to do that if the system was unbootable? Not trying to be rude, just saying to pay a little more attention to small details.
