Hello,

Please help me, my computer is suffering from many problems (which I will post in the approprite discussion ares).

But one odd thing I have noticed is that even though I have a 64bit operating system, my hard drive has 32bit drivers.

Now I was sold my laptop just over a year ago as a 64bit Vita home premium OS, and have ince upgraded to Windows 7 OS.

My warranty ran out on the 8th Octobe, so it's messed up just after (just my luck).
My hard drive is a FUJITSU MJA2250BH G2 ATA Device.

Please help me, I'm in the 3rd year of Uni, and cannot afford to have a dead laptop!

**Also hve now found that Windows Update has been configured to never install drivers....why is this and how do I fix it?**

Hi archwonder, welcome to the forums :)

By 32bit drivers I take it you mean a Program Files (x86) folder? That's perfectly normal on an x64 machine. Any 32bit programs will install to this, or any manual folder.

32bit drivers also work on a 64bit machine but that requires booting using the F8 key and selecting 'Disable forced driver enforcment'

Can you provide a more detailed list of the issues you're having so that we can properly assess your situation.

Hi OS,

Thanks for replying,
I'm a bit of a novice with computers so will try and explain...
By 32 bit drivers I mean when I right click and go onto properties of my C: drive it says my driver file details are (in exact letter case)
C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\disk.sys
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\partmgr.sys

I have also been having SO MANY other problems such as.....
My system reboots and says No internal Harddisk....and then I have to boot from CD, but then I can restart ad works fine again.

System restore deleting my restore points, volume shadow copying being disabled all the time.
Event 14, volsnap - The shadow copies of volume C: were aborted because of an IO failure on volume C:

Numerous Event 41, Kernal-power logs in my event viewer (not from me turning it off manually)
Event 11, atapi - The driver detected a controller error on \device\ide\deport0
Event 11, Disk - The driver detected a controller error on \device\harddisk2\DR3

Loads of:
Event 55, Ntfs - The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run chkdsk utility on the volume OS. I did this and it sort of failed half way through.

So a lot of things gone wrong...would really ppreciate the help!

Thanks so much,
A

That has nothing to do with the driver files themselves. If you notice...there's no system64 folder. 32 bit drivers either work fine, or won't install....there's no middle ground.

That all being said, it sounds likely that your hard drive is dying. I'd back up my data, and run some diags on the drive to be sure.

As above, System32 directory conatains 64 bit files on a 64 bit machine.

Thanks for the replies.

I will try the chkdsk /f.
And yes it does seem that my hard drive is dying, which is so frustrating as my warranty just ran out. It's odd because it works fine, then completely messes up. I've run so many tests that mostly come back fine.
Is there no other way to salvage it?

Cheers everyone.

Salvage what...your data? Yes, back it up now though, before the drive dies completely. Salvage the hard drive? No, not if it is dying...but if you get your data backed up, you can replace the drive. In one afternoon, you could have the OS reinstalled, apps reinstalled, and your data restored.

Hmmm... you may extend it's life by reducing copy paste operations among partition(s)...

Arch,

Can you run this Fujitsu hdd diagnostic tool and report back the results: Software Utilities

Complete a comprehensive test (sector by sector) which can take up to 2hrs - If you have bad sectors on your drive this will find it - there should be a corrupted sector repair tool on completion.

I agree, bad harddrive.

Definitely back everything you need up, and go buy a new one. You should be able to get a fairly inexpensive laptop harddrive.

Everybody can feel free to chastise me, whip me, and put me in my place, but the OP said,

How can one tell the difference between a dying hard drive and a totally corrupted upgrade install?

So I did the fujitsu diagnostic....and within seconds it flashed up with FAIL.
With no option to resolve, so will definitely be buying a new hard drive.

So I have one more question.... I have a perfectly good 250gb hard drive in my old Lenovo laptop, and it is the exact size as the one in my inspiron 1545, but has different connections. It has prongs as opposed to the fujitsu's chip-looking connection.

How do I know which hard drives are compatible with my laptop?
Is there a way to put the other hard drive in?

Thanks so much for the help,
better than what I could have paid for!
