I came across this email today Intel Optane: Memory acceleration kicks PCs into warp drive on April 24 | ZDNet

and after a bit of Googling I think my build days might be over unless I can find some conventional way of building a machine.

Seems to me that Intel and Microsoft have it wrapped up now unless one has zillions of dollars to throw at them because the new stuff as well as being nepotistic is way beyond my seemingly pathetic budget.

I don't really understand this speed related mindset as the current machines I have all work in the blink of an eye boot times around 20 - 25 seconds and browsing well I hit a tab and there is there so why in the name of reason would I throw hard earned dollars at this sort of stuff - unless I have a lot of shares in Microsoft, Intel, and Micron of course:sarc:.

I don't know about how it is in the US and anywhere else but out here it is becoming increasingly expensive to buy components for a new build as most of the store I have dealt with in the past now are not offering stuff that I can afford. The simpler things like SSD's are affordable but I have seen GPU's now advertised at close to and more than a thousand dollars - that is just a tad under the cost of my Ivy B build!!

It makes me wonder where it will all end if indeed there is an end. Right now I think I am at that end and pretty darn sick of the way my only really enjoyable past time / hobby is being wrecked by the pricing of computer gear.

Kabylake skylake seems fairly cheap compared to some of the x99 and their processor

Yep well at $400 for the locked Kabylake and $470 for the unlocked one plus between $250 - $450 for a half decent Z270 Asus board is a lot of money out here and that is just two components. The Z170 boards are not much better when you can find one.

What I find is even more confusing is that the chipsets are also changing to B whatever etc and again the pricing in Australia is just making it so hard for me let alone those whose circumstances are more restricted than mine.

It's kind of the way things have been for about 20 years.
Technology grows at a fast pace and cost more.

Way back when, a computer to do what your cell phone can do would fill a room and cost a bazillion dollars. Then things got small and more powerful and the price went down.
That is why we all have computers in our homes and business.
Now days things get faster and faster and do cost more. One can build a computer without buying a X99 motherboard. Their are just some toots and whistles that one won't get.

The question still arises. Does Microsoft and hardware manufactures take warm showers together?
I think they do. Their is a good reason.
Operating system manufactures and hardware manufactures have to share the same towel.
Be on the same page as some would say.
Hardware manufactures and operating system manufactures must work together in a large degree to get a proper working combination over a wide range of systems.
When making a system with 'M.2' capable ram their are things that have to work together.

1. The motherboard manufactures and its bios and chipset.
2. The ram manufactures must work with the motherboard manufactures.
3. Of course the operating system manufacture (Microsoft) must have a system that can put all this together so (we, us, them) can use it all together.

Doing such things means their must be a collaboration between all these groups.
How else would all the pieces part work together so we can use the new technology?
Will it cost more? Sure it will and has to be expected in my opinion.

If you look at the cost of technology compared to the average available BTA (Boys Toys Allowance), I think that generally, after the initial Early adopter Surcharge, where New Tech costs a lot more than what proceeds it The actual Bang per Buck is better than it was.

The required increase in performance is not for the average home user Surfing the net but for those into media production - seeing the difference a new processor has on video rendering or photo processing of a 300MB+ composite photo montage is the real test of this technology - and with 3D becoming more generally available the improvements are really a must have for the near future

Agree with that Jack just look at smart watches now - unbelievable they can pack all that stuff inside one of them. I also wonder how they can get 128GB of memory onto those micro SD cards - that is as much as a SSD true it is probably not so complicated but all the same 128GB!!

Well Roaster mate from what I read Optane is some sort of memory/drive if I am not completely mistaken as it talks of storage though I might be reading the wrong thing into it.

The really annoying thing about it is that boards (as I understand it) have to have the right chipset and socket for it to be used and then only it seems the very latest boards being put out, and of course they are invariably very expensive or at least out here.

I totally agree with Jack again with those corporations being in the same spa bath as each other - just another ploy to squeeze the last dollar out of the consumer. To me it smacks of having no ethical values or worse still????

Yes to use the new technology one must have new proper hardware. Why would that be any different than it has always been.
A hard drive will only work so fast. 5400 rpm, is 5400 rpm. I don't care how you hook it up.
When someone has a computer that uses Intel Optane, I would bet a dollar to three legged worm that they also have a very fast SSD.
Something like a Intel 750 or better.

Nigel said it simple and correct. When this new technology comes out is cost a lot more than it will in a year.
I can buy two 240 GB Intel SSD's today for what it cost me for my first 120 GB Intel SSD.

If one doesn't want, need or can not spend the money for the newest technology that is just fine. Don't buy it.

One of my system is a X-99 motherboard and it has more options than I really need at the present time. I try to buy for the future as much as I can. I might want to use those option in the coming months or years.

The PC I use is still an i7 2600k and I don't overclock anymore. I think the KabyLake would give me better performance even tough I don't really need it.

Mmm will take a look at that site because the ones I use PCCG Shopping Express and Com Centre are all withing a hwisker of the prices O quoted.

My main desky at the moment is an i5 3750K driven Ivy and to be honest I am not interested in OC anymore as I don't game but I do want an i7 as the last two laptops have them and I am impressed with the speed.

Now if that sorts out the CPU and I can get a reasonable priced Z270 then I might just go it but the reviews do quote the Kaby as only slightly ahead of the Skylake.

My only other beef is the case - cannot get the one I really like as they don't (or at least I cannot find it) supply it anymore out here. - Coolermaster HAF XM because I really do like the quick detach of the side panels and also the provision of lots of fans in a large case. The alternatives I might have mentioned before are either dog ugly or super expensive but maybe MSY might have something eh?

You can install Windows 7 with Kaby Lake but you'll experience problems during installation that will make you do the setup all over again.

Hi John.

Looking for a case/tower is very time consuming. Their are just so many.
It takes me weeks to find what I think I like and then do all the measuring using what info I can find to see if everything will fit. My last build was a very tight fit for everything I wanted to install.
Keeping in mind, I'm fitting 5 lbs. of shot into a 4 lb. bucket.

My last case was a (Phanteks Luxe Tempered Glass).
The case is easy to build in, except when trying to install a large water cooling system. A 360 push/pull radiator in the top. That took a lot of figuring and adjusting. If I would of only use 3 fans on the radiator it would of fit very easily. If one uses a AIO liquid cooling or air cooling I don't think room would be a problem. I had to have a case with front 5 1/4 bays. That limited by choices.
Their are many videos on line that can help.
