Ok so my original computer was a Windows 7 Home Premium and that's the PC I used to work. I had REMOTE DESKTOP on it, it worked fine and yes it was a Windows 7 Home Premium..but yesterday my original pc got fried and smoke came out of it so I am afraid to turn it on.

I am now using my back pc, it is also a windows 7 home premium build 7600, and I remember I use to have remote desktop on it but I right clicked disabled one day a long time ago and after that I was never ever able to get it back. Ive been reading online that Windows 7 home premium does not have the remote desktop option, odd because my other pc had it. Point is.. I need to connect to my job's server asaaap, but I am unable to find a way to connect to their server, I have their ip address and a special login/pass the same way you do in windows remote desktop.

I have tried downloading those rdp patches and stuff and it just does not work! I cannot find the remote desktop anywhere even have the install said "listening" and "remote desktop successfully" etc etc.

Is there a program I can use to connect to my work's server..my boss uses windows 7 remote desktop,,,

I tried using teamviewer and added the ip address but it doesnt work idk if you have to both be using the same program..please in need of help here :/

My last option is to upgrade to windows 7 pro and pay the $80 above for it JUST to get remote desktop :(
I'm trying everything possible though before that.. but I really need this to work in order to start my job

Welcome to Seven Forums,

TeamViewer should work..... your IT Dept. should be able to assist you for any configurations workaround needed in your Windows 7 Home edition as RDC is not supported.

Windows 7 Home premium can use RDP as a client but cannot use it as a server, IE. you can use home premium to access a remote server but you cannot connect to a machine running Home premium from another system using RDP. Your system admin would need to set-up the remote access at the server end an provide you with access details and passwords etc.

How to Access Windows Remote Desktop Over the Internet

Team viewer will do a better job as stated but will need the remote server application installed on the server in unattended mode, do you have access & Administrator rights to the server in order to perform this install? If you do not then you would need to contact the system administrator to perform this work.

You would also need to purchase the team viewer software as this is a commercial application. You would also need to set-up a Teamviewer account - all instructions are on the team-viewer site

Yeah! That's it , that's what I'm trying to do use remote desktop as a server for instance I have a my own laptop and my boss has a server in his pc and we the employees connect to the server through remote desktop, he assigned us each the ip address to connect to the server and then a login user name/password so I would connect to it through Remote Desktop the one built in Windows.. I don't think I am able to do so with Teamviewer because then that means my boss would have to download teamviewer in his pc,right? I am a little intimated to ask him to do so..that's why I'm stressing over remote desktop.. I just don't understand how I was able to use it on this pc before, it just sort of vanished also in my original pc which is windows 7 home premium as well I was able to use remote desktop..i guess I just want to enable that option that asks for the ip address and connects you to the server.. i will give your link a try thank you!

Enter the IP address or the actual URL into the box - you may then be asked for Credentials, (I would expect this but some do not), your "boss" should have provided you with a user ID and a password, these should be entered at this stage, (you treat the remote log-in as you would logging on to your local system). There are some options that you may find useful - you can save the login information as a short-cut, which you can click to start the process without having to remember the details, you can also choose to have windows save the Credentials, (only consider this option on a private system).

When I put the ip address in Connection URL, it states " Make sure that: Your URL is prefixed with https://"
So, I am assuming it has to be in a url format.. I then put https:// and the ip address next to it and it states
"Windows cannot find a remote computer that contains the connection. Make sure that you typed the correct connection URL, or your computer can connect to the internet" :(

I have the ip address to connect to the server and I have the credentials/login information.. I just don't have Windows Remote Desktop on this PC, I use to have it but I believe some sort of update wiped it out

For RDP to work you need access to Port 3389, at both your system and at the remote location, You should be able to open this port on your local system in any local firewall and / or your router firewall. The port at the server end would need to be opened at the server, as well as Port 80

I give up.. I guess there's no way of getting remote desktop back on this PC,
I'm going to ask my boss if I can use teamviewer and perhaps buy me a new laptop sometime soon.
OR also I havent tried a system restore, might try that as well today!
Thanks for the help everyone
