[Solved] I Need Your Opinion on a Processor Upgrade

Hi Everyone,

Nowadays, Core2Quad s are going for dirt cheap prices. Right now, a Q8300 is being sold at my country for more or less $100. It's not brand new however.

Judging from my specifications. What good Quad Core processors can you recommend?

I'm no good when it comes to hardware and what's compatible and not, so I'm asking.

I'm looking for something that will have a significant increase. I'll be rebuilding a new system on December so I need something to get me by until then.

Last but not least, I'd really appreciate it if I can get the biggest bang out of my buck, so to speak

Thanks for the suggestion mate. However, couldn't find any being sold at our online shop in the Philippines. Any other suggestions?

In case you have not done this, check the Intel site and verify which processor your Motherboard is fully compatible with. They list DG31PR and DG31PL. They both seem to support many processors but make sure you select the correct one. It will save you a lot trouble after the upgrade.

It is always a good idea to upgrade hardware if you can, that is what governs your machine's speed and performance, and in desktop machines the main processor, (CPU), is mainly responsible for this.

However, I would be wary of buying used components, they may be unreliable or damaged and there is rarely much you can do about it once you have parted with your money.


It is also essential to make sure any items you upgrade are compatible with your present hardware, before you buy them.

I was unable to find any specifications for your motherboard at the manufacturer's site.

Guys, I found my mainboard's specifications

Won't the FSB speed be an issue? 1333 for my processor. 800 for my RAM?

I mean I truly don't know these things.

I had to switch to a E8400 from a Q6600 and was really unhappy. I just couldn't afford a higher end Quad processor at the time and no one had any Q6600's. I'd make sure the used one was working porperly before I would purchase a used CPU.
The Q6600 if you get a GO stepping is very overclockable.

Hi,

Actually, I don't intend to overclock it because of two reasons.

1. The heat in my room is truly extreme. It's facing a really crappy roof which bounces the heat of the Sun straight to my room. On a normally clocked system. My CPU goes to 50 degrees
2. I use the stock heat sync. I don't have enough cooling power to support it.

I'm actually dealing with a guy right now having this same model. Any other opinions on it?

I just wanted to update you guys. I've changed three components of my system due to damages. My motherboard, ASUS M2N68 AM-PLUS; My processor, AMD Athlon II x4 2.9 GHz Propus and my Power Supply, to a generic 600W one. I'm now changing my video card to a ATi HD 5670, probably in a week or two. So I essentially bought a new system

Anyway. Thanks for all the advice guys. I'm marking this as solved.
