I only have one Headphone/Microphone Input HELP!

Hi there

on my hp mini 210 - 1000 i only have one mini jack input and the symbol above it shows headphones and microphone. if i insert a microphone in to it the speakers on my netbook stop working and when i go to control pannel to make sure the settings mean my speakers are used they are please help.

Looking at this user guide http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c02182682/c02182682.pdf it says that's what happens which I think that's the case with most laptops that's how mine works.
