i had found the entry on forum from someone- i've had the same recurring problem with windows update-you cannot stop windows update-it will update itself automatically no matter what the settings on the computer-that should stop in january when w7 is no longer supported-thank you know who-not microsoft. evidently this is a common problem. i think they may be intentionally not trying to solve the problem so people will buy the new versions. it is a waste of money and processing power. i found desktop restore, but haven't used it yet. i've been using sandboxie and icon scrambling hasn't recurred since????

Maybe I'm not understanding but you should be able to select "Never check for updates" in the settings in Windows Update. You have to reboot for the change to take affect.

moving of icons and desktop changes after w7 updates

I've been battling desktop and icon changes for about 4 months. From what I've gathered and experienced Windows Update updates itself first for important updates before even checking no matter the setting made. I made the setting never check for updates first and then had geek squad make settings to block updates. I was told by a tech after this that updates would be able to force themselves to be made for important updates. When I checked I found that this is apparently a pretty common problem. Since I've been using Sandboxie the updates have occurred much less often and haven't resulted in scrambling the icons. It's possible I went on the internet without being Sandboxed and an update occurred when updates were recorded By using Sandboxie it supposedly disposes of update changes, although a few have been recorded as happening, even though no scrambling has recurred over the last few weeks.

You weren't very specific about what you mean by icon changes. Which icons are changing as a result of Windows updates. I've never seen that problem but, I'm only one person.

Normally even if programs (or the OS) update, it does not rearrange or change your desktop icons. And as was stated earlier, OS updates can be turned off permanently. Windows does NOT 'force critical updates' -- if updates are turned off, they're off, regardless of what Geek Squad said.

Allowing updates to occur in Sandoxie is just a waste of time and resources, only to be deleted when SBIE is closed, assuming you have it set to delete the sandbox every time the browser is closed. But OS updates would not be run in the sandbox anyway, but outside it. Sandboxie is used mainly for running your browser, to protect you when browsing. It can also be used to run a program, but installing SBIE does not automatically run your entire computer in sandbox mode. Again, Windows updates would occur outside the sandbox.

It doesn't sound like you are being updated... it sounds like some rogue program, conflict, or process is causing problems with your DT.

But I'd first run Adwcleaner (free) to check for viruses.

If none found, would open a command window (run as admin) and type:

sfc /scannow

... so Windows can check for corrupted system files. It will auto-repair any it can, if corrupted files are found. This process takes a few minutes. When it's done type EXIT to close the window.

You can also try rebuilding your cache (lots of info on that - search this forum or Google it).

If none of those things reap an answer, it could be a program you installed around the time the issue started. Can go to Programs & Features and let the window populate with all installed programs, then check the column for date installed, and see if you installed anything around that time. If so, try uninstalling it and see if the problem goes away. If so, look for an alternative program. Good luck.
