Ive only had maybe 2 or three icons that have doen this, but there were a couple in the hidden icons try that ive noticed that have been gone and i have no idea why. im posting this now, because today my volume icon is gone. Why would that disappear? Ive tried going into notification area icons in control panel, volume control was set to, "show icon and notifications" and i believe thast the correct setting. i tried changing it to another selection and then changing it back, and it gave me the message "this notification icon is not currently active..it will be shown the next time it becomes active. wtf!

A little OT but that was one of my pet peeves with Vista. Almost every other boot I would lose some of the system icons and the option to enable them would be greyed out. I used to have to log off and back on to get them back. Thankfully, I haven't seen this annoying behavior in W7 at all for several months now so they must have fixed it. I don't know why MS never managed to fix it in Vista though.

to redsox and krullkitty if u guys read my post, i already tried that. Thats what half my post was, was explaining how i was messing with the settings in the "show icon and notifications" option in control panel....which is the area in which u customize the setting for system tray icons. But no matter ehat setting i tried i still couldnt get the missing icons to show back up.
