IDE ATA/ATAPI driver missing?

I wasn't sure if I should put this here, but it is a driver problem.

I have installed my new samsung SSD (840 pro) and then stumbled upon the information about setting ACHI for TRIM settings. TRIM is enabled as per CMD check but,

there is no IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers option available to choose from. Is this a problem? Also when I check the BIOS there is an option for ACHI, but the next option below it is selected by default titled "Intel Rapid Restore Technology RAID" (not the Rapid Storage Technology I misread it as initially)

devices.png

Should I leave this be or is there something missing in the way of a driver AND/OR changing the BIOS as well?

The Other devices category could be pointing to an issue. Simplest fix, if it works, is to right click and uninstall the devices under the Other devices category. Now, reboot. MS will reinstall the devices. Hopefully, where they should be.

If they return to the Other devices category, then we can try another approach.

Thank you foor the response. I did as you said and an Intel driver did install, but it did not change anything with the original problem, both of those "other drivers" are still present.

I appreciate the help my friend.

I'm beginning to get discouraged as the first link sent me into a redirect loop and if I go to the support page home to search for any manual updates I can't seem to find any broadcom USH ones. As for the second option; there is no ID for the PCI database to look up other than two hardware IDS:

ACPI\SMO8800
*SMO8800

However a google search revealed that it is apparently that it’s an accelerometer, a device that detects when your laptop may be falling and instantly stops the hard disk so it isn’t damaged on impact.

I already used dell's detect service to install any immediate updates, so I'm just at a lost as to the IDE ATA/ATAPI drivers

If the FIX doesn't work, try this...

  1. Open Device Manager (Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager)
  2. The hardware whose drivers are missing will appear as Unknown device, so it's easier to locate the device.
  3. Right click on the unknown device and click on Properties.
  4. Under the Properties window click on Details tab and select Device Instance Id from the drop down box.
  5. You should see a code similar to this

    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27DC&SUBSYS_30868086
    &REV_01\4&1E46F438&0&40F0
  6. The portion of the code highlighted in RED is the Vendor ID and the portion highlighted in GREEN is the Device ID. In this example:

    Vendor ID = 8086
    Device ID = 27DC
  7. Once you have obtained both the IDs, proceed to PCI Database. There you can either search for the vendor from the vendor ID or directly get information about the device along with the vendor name by searching with the device ID.

It could be one of the ones near the bottom, but nothing dealing with any IDE:cry: Here's a question for you.

When I installed 7 on the SSD, I did not format the harddrive with the ACHI in the BIOS. As I said, when I went into the BIOS after installation I notice the ACHI was unticked and the default RAID setting was ticked meaning I installed 7 with that. Could that have a bearing on this situation? It seems odd that somehow this driver does not exist

BB I am no expert but you do say you installed 7 onto a new SSD? Personally I would go back save any data first of course and set the ACHI before you reinstall.

I would also if I were you download and use the Samsung magician software it may be of help I don't know as I say I am not an expert but just saying what I would try.

Can you see the PCI/VEN numbers under the Hardware ID's line?

If the "Hardware IDs" does not show in the drop down menu let us know - that is important information too. A screen shot of all available on the Details Tab would be cool too (Just the top 10 lines or so).

EDIT: also, could you post a screen shot of Device Manager with your "Storage Controllers" expanded?

I assume you did a clean install of W7? Where did you get the drivers for the install?

Went ahead and reinstalled and switched ACHI on the BIOS and sure enough problem solved with the original driver. Now there was one recommended driver update from dell (the same as last time) and after clicking on it it unzipped the files and opened folder they were in and I was presented with the 2 txt files below. As you can see there is a pdf file titled broadcam (like the unknown driver) and inside the driver folder pictured below there are the following files ( these files were located inside of a folder labeled CV) So it seems this may be the anwser to the unknown driver of broadcom.

printrt.png

In the same folder there was another folder titlted WBF Firmware and the following folders were locating inside
folder.png

Not sure if this is neede to resolve both unknown driver issues or just the one but the two txt documents below may help

So the PDF (didn;t have anything to read it on at the time) show that the broadcom is for fingerprint detection software, something I do not want or need (I believe my model does not support as well) so I think I will remove this driver to be rid of the situation once and for all

Yes. I'll do that for both as the finger print and the other (which is some areoacelorator for droping a laptop) are not needed.
