Solved IE 10 update failure Windows 7 error 9C59

I've tried all the obvious stuff and nothing works. SFC reports no integrity issues with the OS.

I'm wondering if the original problem was trying to update using Windows Update first. I was able to install IE 10 on my HP laptop running Windows 7 Professional x64 by running the stand alone installer. I did have the updated video driver so I didn't run into the package update install problem even though it has a hybrid video system.

Thanks,

DeWitt Payne

This seems to me to be a prime error...

This appears to be an LDR branch off the main GDR - and as such could be difficult to fix.
This would almost certainly have required manual download and install of a hotfix patch - LDR patches don't usually come by way of Windows Update.
I'm not fully conversant with the methods of fixing this type of problem - so I'm, going to see if I can get a couple of others involved, who may have more knowledge.

I don't remember doing any manual patching until the IE 10 installation failed. Is it worth comparing the list of installed fixes in windows update with the list accessed through control panel program uninstall?

I want to try and pass the buck on this to MS :)

From our side it would help if we could get some logs from the machines with the issues. These logs will be able to provide more details on what exactly is happening.

I’ve attached a batch file that will grab logs that can help us understand the issue.

Instructions for the end user would be to:

· Copy GetLogs_local.bat to desktop

· Run elevated

· Send back the SetupFailureLogs folder that the script creates

Once we have some logs we can look into this further.

I looked at the logs originally attached, specifically the CBS.LOG, and I don't see an attempt to install IE at all (you'd see a parent package call for all of the "InternetExplorer" packages in the CBS log if it had gotten that far). I think Noel's request to gather logs is prudent, especially the IE*.log files from the %windir% directory on the machine. I don't think the IE install ever got far enough to unpack and start trying to install the .cab files themselves, as the CBS log doesn't have any indication this happened.

I've attached those logs. Glancing through them, the failure seems to be opening a file called IE10-neutral.Extracted.cab. Either it's never extracted, or the installer is putting it somewhere other than where it's supposed to be. It's a little hard to tell as the temp files are all deleted when the installer closes.

That error appears t be the most common one preventing install - MS is working on it.

According to your log, the error is actually with a WinSxS for MS12-052 (KB2722913) - it's the cumulative IE update from August 2012. The odd thing is that it isn't the latest cumulative update for IE (by far), but it does appear to be the actual failure and not what gets reported, as a failure with the IE10 neutral.cab:

This failure matches the error code and time in the IE10 log files, so I'm inclined to believe it's failing to update from IE9 to IE10 due to an error in the IE9 SxS files, not the IE10 installation package.

So should I try uninstalling that package?

I uninstalled KB2722913. It didn't ask for a restart, but I restarted anyway. Went to Windows Update and only IE 10 was listed. Selected it and clicked on install. It worked! Windows Update now says my computer is up to date. Should I mark the thread as solved?

Well done! - I hesisted to suggest that, in view of cluberti's comment that a later update was installed.

That sounds like a plan :)
For completeness, would you please run through the posting instructions again, and post the new CBS folder? - it'll give us a chance to see if there's any residuals or new problems.

I'm betting that the later update(s) were supposed to remove the offending item and didn't. That's probably why a restart wasn't necessary.

I've attached the latest CBS folder and SFC says no integrity violations

The post-uninstall CBS log looks fine to me - CheckSUR shows only the 'expected' errors from the IE10 install, which MS is working on.

Should be resolved now, yes. The log only shows expected issues for IE10, but nothing that would cause your system any issues going forward.

If uninstalling KB2722913 will allow the IE update to install correctly, I would like to do this, however, it is not obvious how to uninstall KB2722913 and reapply the IE 10 update. Could someone please list the steps required to implement this correction with emphasis on the "how"? Thanks!
