IE10 won't install and now IE9 won't either

We have a Windows 7 x86 box that won't install IE10, first via automatic updates, then through manual install.

I took over the problem and removed IE10 in Windows Features, only to discover I was left with no IE at all. I attempted to reinstall 9, but got a message that a later version was already installed. Additional attempts to install 10 fail with no specific error message.

Searching TechNet and the Web in general yield nothing relevant to our case. Any input ??

you have to go into the programs and features menu and on the left pane there should be a link saying turn windows features on or off and if IE10 is unticked, then you need to tick hit ok and then restart your computer and then you should have access to IE10 again

Take a peek in regedit mate and see if there is any IE listed under Microsoft.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software>Microsoft > scroll down the list if the IE is installed it will be listed as Internet Exporer.

Thought about the Update Readiness tool. Running updates now. Will try that shortly.

Turning it back on was a brain belch from juggling too many computers at once. That did at least bring 9 back, but still no joy updating to 10. I'll install the "SURT" once Patch Tuesday updates are done, then try again with IE 10.

Windows Update should give a error message . Does it go through the download inside Windows Update .

I didn't run it myself, but another technician did. He reports no error message. It no longer shows up in Windows Update for me. It seems to think it's already installed.

Click on the rb: button inside

type in Programs and Features and press [ENTER] . Click on the “View installed updates” in the left pane of the menu. Go over to the “Uninstall an update” screen and scroll down to the “Microsoft Windows” section. Do you see Windows Internet Explorer 10 ? Listed

Sounds like someone used Hide,
See what Restore hidden updates does should be listed on the top left of the Windows update window,
You can also go to Programs and features/ Uninstall a program and on the top left click on Turn windows features on or off,
See what is listed for Internet explorer and make sure the box is Checked.

Another tech noted that he had hidden the update, but nothing shows up under hidden updates.
IE 10 is listed in Windows Features, but IE9 is what's actually installed.
I ran all the Patch Tuesday updates, but that made no difference. I can certainly check for updates again, and will the next time I get to look at it, but I'm not holding my breath.
I'm off Wednesdays, so I didn't work on it yesterday. Notes don't show that anyone else did either, so no progress yet.

My best recollection is that 10 is not listed, but I'll look again next time I'm over there.

I meant to post this Tuesday, but had a hectic end of my day. There are 4 computers in that office. At least 2 more have the same issue with 10 failing to install, so I'm looking for a common denominator, and I may have found it.
Aftermarket video cards were installed in all 4 to accommodate dual displays. Unlike me (I let Windows pick its own driver) the technicians who installed them used the vendor supplied disk. There is an article about a similar failure which notes an issue with the video drivers. I'm thinking that's the root of the problem. One of the users was absent Tuesday and may be on vacation. If so, I'll have time to tinker with at least 1 of the 4 computers and hopefully will be able to cleanly remove the vendor driver and related software to test if that's the issue.

I'll keep everyone posted, though I don't know how soon I can get back over there.

Indeed it is. I'm one of the IT guys here. This department is outside of my normal turf. I just jumped in to see if I could help resolve the issue since the rest seemed stumped.

Look for what my opinion is worth the government dept I work for uses software that will only run on IE9 perhaps that is why they hid the 10?? who knows quite frankly I think you are putting yourself through a lot of grief for very little reward.

No, there's nothing they do here that would necessitate staying with 9. I have an old XP VM that I use for a couple of things written by lazy vendors who don't want to code to anything other than XP, but that's not the case here. They want 10, they just can't seem to get it.
As far as the grief goes, I'm just a stubborn old coot that's determined to fix this no matter what.

Don't you guys have Windows Updates pushed down at night ? Where users don't do anything ? In enterprise environments the Windows Update should be blocked for users .

It's not users having trouble installing 10, it's IT.

Since I didn't set these up, I can't say for certain how updates are handled, but I'm guessing (hoping) they update overnight while users are logged off. The user did however (apparently) see some kind of indication that 10 failed to install, which generated the ticket in the first place.

I picked this one up after other techs gave up on solving it.

Just an quick update; Safe Mode didn't help either.

I did finally get an error code; 9C59, which leads to a zillion or so hits, but no solutions.
Event log shows a 0X80070643, which I'm still looking into.

Got to get back to my office for now though, so it may be next week before I can poke at this one again.
