IE8 not loading pages on some tabs

In Windows 7 RC, i got this perculiar problem when IE8 will refuse to load a webpage if it's opened in a new tab (middle-click, ctrl+click on a link or alt+enter on url/search box)

Hitting stop and reload will not get any response too, monitored network and found that it's not even attempting to load the webpage.

Sometimes, closing the tab and trying again from the parent tab won't work either.

Found that if I middle-click on a link multiple times (to open multiple tabs of the same page), the first 3 or 4 tabs will always fail to connect and finally start loading on the last tab.

When I look at the processes, i'll see multiple instances of iexplore.exe.
A couple of them are more than 40MB, and some are less than 5MB.
Killing the 5MB processes has no effect on my IE8 session, thus I assume those are the instances of the unresponsive tabs.

Somehow, IE8 failed to clear off the dead instances.

IE8 seems to have adopted a weird way to manage tabs.
Whereas Firefox manage all tabs in a single process and Chrome simply opens tabs as individual processes, IE8 has 1 process managing a few tabs.

Not only Win7

I have the exact same issue with IE8, but my OS is not Win7 on that PC.

So, the conclusion must be that it is not Win7 related, but an IE8 problem.

Has anybody found a solution to this problem????? I have the very same thing with my IE8. neither can I click on a link that would normally open in a new window.... Any help here would be appreciated!

I had a similar issue when I upgraded AVGFree one time. I can't remember the version, but it caused nothing but problems so I removed it. Do you happen to use AVGfree?

Have the exact same problem even before there was a tab feature.

I tend to open many windows or (now)tabs (about 10-20) and eventually, even after closing the older windows or tabs, the newer pages that are opened will not load and or be limited to left click only, (I will not be able to right click and taskmanager) or completely freeze with the page still being active.


I've just got a new computer with all the latest technology but the problem with multiple tabs seems to be worse. The tabs will not open pages randomly, I'll have 4 tabs open and atleast one will be loading the page forever unless I reopen it on the 5th tab. Closing all the windows will not help unless you go into task manager and manually ending IE tasks, which there will be multiple IE tasks running with all of the memories peaking around 500000K.

I always thought it was my computer but it seems to do something with the registery. There was a way of altering the registery that did help, but I cant find the page anymore.

If I used it I would try some of the tips.

I called microsoft Help, and they fixed it (computer sharing). Works great now. I think part of the problem was the AVG Free, but I downloaded AVG free after they fixed it and the computer is still working great and opening tabs.

What is "computer sharing?" Are you referring to file and printer sharing? And if so what about it is changed that enables IE 8 to open pages in new tabs?

I had a problem with new tabbs not opening. the instructions on the folloing link fixed it:
You cannot log in to or connect to secured Web sites in Internet Explorer

Here is the method:


Method 7: Use the System File Checker (Sfc.exe) tool to scan all Windows File Protection (WFP)-protected files

Use System File Checker with the /scannow parameter to immediately scan and verify the versions of all the system files that Windows File Protection helps protect. If System File Checker discovers that such a file was overwritten, it retrieves the correct version of the file from the cache folder (Systemroot\System32\Dllcache) or from the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file. System File Checker also checks and repopulates the cache folder. You must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group to run System File Checker.

To run System File Checker with the /scannow parameter, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
3. At the command prompt, type sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER.
