What happened to Opera? Fast, reliable, no bloated add-ons, no problems?

No one likes fast reliable and non bloated add ons browsers. :)
Just kidding lol, I am a Opera devote and love it because of its right hold click
and left click hold click
option and haven't found it in any other browser.

'Although it renders some things badly ugh (cnet for some odd reason)
and its ad blocking could be nicer getting rid of the white spots after blocking ads though.

As far as I am concerned IE8 has slower then usual response times to talk to a server (website) and these 1-2 seconds add over time and thats why a lot of people say it takes minutes, because it if you add in all those slow loading seconds it does take seconds and its frustrating when looking at pages and clicking links etc.

IE8 takes a shade under 2 seconds to load on my netbook and another 2-3 seconds to fully load the default homepage of MSN.ca. Firefox loads my homepage in about 2 seconds but takes about 5 seconds to come up in the first place.

I think the stigma of IE's past is giving people false impressions about how it is now. It's not a "better" browser than the alternatives of today, but it's not slow either.

Anyone still deluded into thinking IE8 is fast by any means should take a look at this.
While it is true that all applications including browsers have been increasing the bloat at an exponential rate, so have the specs and capabilities of the available hardware. The internet is also getting more bloated, with the average download required for a webpage to load increasing to as much as 30 Mb for a custom myspace profile vs. a few dozen KB for the average page in the time of IE 5, which is I think, more of a determining factor in the time it takes for a page to load when considering that average available bandwidth has not kept up.

I have nothing of any importance to say except I love to read these browser war threads I use IE8 and am happy with it. So I'll let the rest of you post on. Fabe

I have no problems loading IE or Firefox. I use IE when the site requires it.

I prefer Firefox because it has three extensions (adblock plus, noscript, and flashblock) that makes me feel safer when browsing and help speed up page loads by getting rid of the extra stuff.

This is not a dig at IE8 but as far as speed goes: My work Email is through Zimbra, I have 120 messages in my inbox. It takes IE8 1 min 33 sec to fully load the messages and rest of the window. FF takes less than 3 seconds total. That's a massive difference, and has nothing to do with internet connection speed as a previous poster has suggested.

I think it should stand to reason that IE is the most used browser, after all it is the only option available and Joe public know's no better.

It's Microsofts' operating system though so they get to decide what's in and what's not, it's a shame really because MS has been standing still(imo) with IE compared to other newer browsers.

I recommend chrome to all that I know.

Hi there
Speed of a Browser can be related to many things such as your Internet Connection, the quality of code on the target web site, the number of "addons" incorporated with the browser and the amount of "Integration" with the host OS.

In general for a "typical bog standard user" there isn't a significant difference amomgst ANY of them.

Use what you prefer. Quite frankly in the course of things shaving microseconds off this and that is a bit like some of the arguments you get on Camera or Photography forums where people spend more time in "Pixel peeping" than actually discussing the quality / techniques required to get the BEST PICTURES.

As the next generation of Computing and Operating systems will be more and more cloud based - which implies that the BROWSER will become integrated into the OS (or even BECOME the OS) I think I'll stick with MS's version.

I used to like FF but is there really any significant difference these days -- to me it's just a question of preferences.

Google's chrome is another which embraces closer integration with the OS -- but until we actually SEE a working version of Google Chrome's OS (not the browser BTW) I'll hold my horses on that.

Cheers
jimbo

Try this with IE8, though it is titled IE7 PRO the newest version is fully functional with IE8 and has many customizable fetures including an AD BLOCKER that works quiet well. May want to check out the turorials for each feature on the web site. Oh yes, it is free.

it is called giving you the option of installing the extra programs that come with a microsoft os.
- Loading up your OS with a bunch of competitor's products? What a horrible business model.

Microsoft would not only have to figure out how to coordinate everything with the developers, but they would also have to figure out how to incorporate things into Windows update, so users don't have to figure out how to update their software (may be fine for people like you and me, but the average user does not understand this).

I don't want the option for AIM, ICQ, Trillian, etc.. just because Microsoft ships with Windows Live Messenger.

Have you see Ninite Easy PC Setup - Download/Install Multiple Programs Fast ? You can download all the most commonly used software here.

Chrome now has ad-block. Ad-blocker is the only extension I use but you will find there are plenty of extensions for chrome now.

The Chrome adblock is far from being as functional as the Firefox version. The Firefox adblock will block the ad before it tries to load, as opposed to the Chrome version, which blocks the ad after it loads.

I haven't found an adblocker for any browser that's as functional as Adblock Plus for Firefox.

Ditto on Adblock plus and NoScript. I don't use Flashblock because NoScript seems to take care of that as well.

When I installed Windows ,7 I configured and played with IE8. It is certainly a BIG improvement over IE6. But compared with Firefox, it is way slow. Maybe I have not used it enough nor tweaked it enough. I enjoy the ease of customizing Firefox to my liking.

More add-ons will bloat and slow down Firefox. IE8 x64 is more than passable, but I use Opera on the laptop in my specs.
