IE8 - Program Links load 32bit, want 64bit

So basically,
I run IE64bit.. runs everything I have without problems,
32bit always locks up randomly.
The only problem i have is if I click a link in a program it loads 32bit IE.

which will eventually lockup..

What setting can I change in the registry or where ever so that when a program calls IE, it loads 64bit and not 32bit..

The fact that IE 32bit is locking up isn't a good sign in general..

Not to mention the majority of the web isn't 64-bit friendly. (Including flash)

But to answer your question... since there is no specific setting for 64-bit, open the Default Programs window, choose Associations, and make sure all web-related entries in the PROTOCOLS heading (down at the bottom) (http://, https://, ftp://, etc etc) are set to: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe (notice the lack of (x86))

I agree with Jonathan - you're simply avoiding the problem with a band-aid rather than fixing the underlying wound, which is something in your IE8 install (32bit) is flaky (and most likely it's an add-on).

In fact, why not give IE9 a try? I loath IE and even I can at least stand it now.

Trying Ie9 now,
seems to run fine..

I didn't uninstall ie8, prolly going to uninstall everything and reinstall to make sure there's not problems..
no lockups yet, and programs seem to be defaulting to ie9.64 and not ie8..
as I couldnt change in default programs the difference in IE and Ie64 for some reason.

Actually I noticed that there is still a wired thing going on..
I can tell there is a difference only b/c norton's webbar loads or does not.

What I mean is, I have norton AV, which has a safe tool bar.. in ie8 it would sit right under the address bar..
when I installed ie9, it is gone...
I dont care that its gone.

When I load links from programs, it loads what looks like IE9, but the difference is that tool bar is back..
havent noticed any problems yet.. just odd that it does this.

I notice on facebook, every other page has to be set to and from compatibility mode.
really annoying.. really..

Sounds like links from programs may be loading the 32-bit IE9. I know for a fact that the Norton toolbar is not 64-bit browser-friendly. Double check that.

Facebook isn't IE9 friendly yet and probably won't be until it comes out.

If you go back to IE8 and still have the problem, try a reset: Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Reset

I know for a fact that the Norton toolbar is not 64-bit browser-friendly. Double check that.

JL is 100% correct.

Fact : in NIS2010 and NIS2011, the IE8 x64 (and probably also IE9 x64 if it exists) browser is totally unprotected by the NIS security plug-ins (anti-phishing, safe web and identity safe functions). This is the reason reason that the Norton Toolbar does not show when an x64 browser is opened.

This has been confirmed by Symantec here:

I strongly recommend reverting to an x86 (32 bit) browser if you still want the NIS browser security plug-ins.
