IE8 Script errors and other problems

I have been running IE8 with no issues since I got my computer 14 months ago. Now things have gone bad.

I am getting "Out of memory at line xx" and "Stop running this script? A script on this webpage is causing your browser to run slowly..."

It seems to occur on one specific website and then all other sites will experience problems. I have had it occur for the first time in a session at another website so I would say it is not website specific.

If I run with no add-ons I will still get these errors.

Some background: I was getting an info bar error about an add-on failing to load on certain sites and traced it to doubleclick.net being in restricted sites, placed there by SpywareBlaster. Once I removed it from restricted sites, no more info bar error. But then I started noticing Unknown Zone (Mixed) status on several sites. Then the script errors started. If I put doubleclick.net back in restricted zones I will still get the script errors and will be back to getting my add-on error.

For troubleshooting I happened to see there was a Java update so I uninstalled the version I had and installed the most current.

I also had reset IE8 but noticed no improvement so restored back so I could at least have all my settings and history back.

I'm kind of out of ideas. I know I can move to another browser but I have used IE for almost 20 years and would like to stay with it if possible.

Registry fixes by Microsoft are fine (they originally put them in your computer to begin with). You can have Microsoft fix it for you so that you do not have to fear messing it up yourself. That file on that website is safe to download.

Interestingly running the offending website in Compatibility View seems to stop the script errors. This is a site I have visited literally every day for a year and never had a problem. Why it now is causing issues is beyond me. But if Compatibility View resolves it so be it. Computers are sometimes all about workarounds.

Perhaps it is on their end (They haven't updated their website in a while, perhaps)?

But glad it is working.

I'd probably agree but I never had a problem there until recently. So the detective in me says there is a problem on my end. But what  ?

Since I'm out of ideas I was thinking about how people sometimes say Miscrosoft Updates causes problems with their systems. I wonder if any of those from last week could have messed something up?

Microsoft updates do not cause problems, unless there was a problem before hand, and the update messed with it. It is possible that through a series of updates, that particular website has become "outdated". There is a point in time which something becomes outdated if not kept up, and perhaps it was met. That is what the compatability view button was created for.

Another clue to my issue perhaps?

I tried to Organize Favorites in IE and I got Error:100 Invalid Class String.

I sort of panicked and did a system restore to a few days ago and it now works. Also for the last day I had not been able to access a website I went to daily for the last year. After the restore I could access it again.

Further investigation showed the Organize Favorite error was related to a missing JScript.dll. Which
is used by Windows to display web pages running Javascript. If the DLL is missing, then you will not be able to view certain content online.

I can find the file on my system using search and it says it was created on Jan. 12 2012, which I don't understand. Shouldn't it have been a system file that came with the computer?

I'm sure this is all related to the script errors I've been having.

Script errors continue. To the point I can't surf without having an issue. I guess it's good bye to IE after 20 years.

bru, sorry to hear that. I don't get those errors, so I know it isn't a general thing that is happening to everyone, but to you specifically. Which means there is something going on in your system. Could it be the antivirus? Which do you have? List all the security software you have on your pc. Run IE without add-ons (to see how it does). Try uninstalling IE: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/112121-internet-explorer-9-uninstall.html - tutorial created by DarkNovaGamer

Install it again through the microsoft website: Internet Explorer - Web Browser for Microsoft Windows

Once again, let me know all of the security software on your computer. Also, a repair install isn't a bad idea: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html - tutorial created by Brink

I didn't get the errors until recently so yes I'm sure it is related to my system, specifcally IE.

I have reset IE. No difference. I have uninstalled/reinstalled Java. No difference. I have no desire to move to IE9 and even if I did I imagine the problems would follow along.

I certainly will not do a repair install of my system to fix a browser problem. I really have no choice but to move to a new browser.

Very sorry :o . I do appreciate the suggestions. This has got me very frustrated and I let it get the better of me.

I suppose when things run smooth you expect them to continue, but that's typically not the case. I think I've tried most of the major troubleshooting steps so no other choice but to keep on plugging away. Maybe I'll stumble across something.

No problem

You might click the repair install link I gave to see exactly what it does, and if you are able to do it. It doesn't affect as much as you may think.

You might try IE9, it it does have potential to fix your problem. It will take some getting used to, but it is safer, looks better (at least to me), and has less clutter. It still has everything you could want in IE8, just some differences that you may eventually come to appreciate. Additionally, if you do not like it, you could uninstall it here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/112121-internet-explorer-9-uninstall.html - tutorial created by DarkNovaGamer

See why IE9 is my favorite browser: Discover Internet Explorer 9 - Microsoft Windows
Compare browsers, or compare IE8 and IE9: Compare browsers to Internet Explorer 9 - Microsoft Windows

I only used firefox prior to IE9. IE9 is the reason I like IE

I would love to suggest if I believe your antivirus has potential to be troublesome, or any of your other security software you may have installed, but alas, you haven't told me what you have installed. It is not my intention to pressure you into a 'correct' antivirus, but to make recommendations based on what I've experienced. You have the option to take my opinions up or disregard them. But whatever you choose, if you would like such a suggestion, do let me know what you have :)

*Edit - you did mention spywareblaster earlier. Do you have it installed? Sadly, I don't know much about the program, but you might try disabling it to see what happens.

Did you do this?: Click the "Internet Options" link from the menu and then click the "Advanced" tab.
Find and check "disable script debugging". You might also try diabling hardware Acceleration

Delete all temporary internet files. Make sure windows is completely updated

Make sure you haven't disabled any services.

Also, do this tutorial just for thehelovit: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html - tutorial created by Brink

I realize I may have mentioned some of these twice. That is just because I'm lazy...

No worries about repeat suggestions, I'll try anything twice ;) .

Script debugging is disabled. IMBW but I don't think IE8 has the option to disable hardware acceleration. I think that came in to play with IE9.

SpywareBlaster was definitely causing a problem in how pages were displaying because it had placed a site in Restricted Zones. But disabling it completely doesn't help with the script problem.

I think Windows is up to date. I have hidden a few updates but they were updates that I didn't think were relevant. I'll go back and take a look and see if there is an update I should install.

I clean Temp Files with CCleaner daily.

SFC /VERIFYONLY comes up clean. I think that is basically the same as SFC/ SCANNOW (I try to be aware of what needs fixing rather than just letting it do its thing).

Regarding IE9. I think I may go for it. How would you suggest installing it? Through Windows Update where it has been offered for a while. Or should I download it from MS? Perhaps it makes a difference if I ultimately want to uninstall it.

Ccleaner is a good program to have when you are having trouble, but I wouldn't use it daily by any means. It actually has the ability to mess things up if you aren't careful.

Is spywareblaster an actual Antivirus or just antimalware? You may need an antivirus. If I can recall, I thought I heard that spywareblaster is very aggressive, and extreme care needs to be excersized when using it. It could potentially be the/a problem. It may be that the damage has already been done.

Constant removal of temp files won't let you save much information on the internet. Perhaps "Private browsing" is a better option. Temp files only really need to be removed when you notice slowdowns or you have internet problems.

You can install IE9 any way you would like, they both work.

I use CCleaner in the most benign way, just temp files, cookies and a few other things. I didn't think cleaning temp files frequently could hurt. I routinely have more than 50,000 KB in just a few hours of browsing.

Someone here gave a good tutorial of SpywareBlaster, of course I can't find it. Among other things it prevents known sites from doing bad things through ActiveX scripting. For real time AV I use MSE. I also use MBAM and SUPERAntiSpyware for on demand scanning. Along with SpywareBlaster they all are well regarded programs.

IE9 looks interesting but of course I've heard some horror stories. I always have moved to the most current IE (my first computer had IE6), but for some reason I have not made the leap to IE9 yet. I was thinking of just waiting for IE10.
