Solved IE9 will only open in 64-bit

The title pretty much says it all. Whenever I open IE, it opens in 64-bit mode. If I right click it and select 'New Tab' it will open in 32-bit. Any ideas?

Are you aware that Windows 7 64-bit gives you the choice of both versions of Internet Explorer i.e. a 32-bit and a 64-bit version?

You'll find them both under All Programs.

That's the problem, both options open 64-bit IE. Unless I right-click it on the taskbar and select 'New Tab' for example.

I don't have an answer but would like to know how to establish which version has opened.

Well I have the 32-bit pinned and I always use it just like everyone else. But when I click it, the 64-bit version opens. I've had this happen before, it's just this time I've tried everything.

What happens if you pin the 64-bit version and do you pin to the Start Menu or the Taskbar?

I was just thinking that if you pin the 64-bit version and just use that, it won't cure the problem, but it would stop you worrying about it.

Is there any particular reason you prefer the 32-bit version other than problems with Adobe Flash on the 64-bit version of IE, which I believe Adobe have fixed now?

For a start my Norton toolbar and all my plugins won't work. Also I saw from benchmarks Java performance is very slow. Not sure if it would actually affect me, but...

Not sure what to suggest now then, other than disabling Internet Explorer in "Turn Windows features on or off", restarting your computer, and then re-enabling it.

Failing that, have you considered using another browser such as Chrome or Firefox?

Sounds like your shortcuts are mixed up .
Open windows explorer quick keyboard shortcut " Win R then enter \ in the search field " open the Program Files (x86) then open the Internet explorer folder & start it from there.

For Windows 64 bit, your system drive (normally C:\ ) Program Files are for the 64 bit programs & Program Files (x86) are for the 32 bit programs.

That is definitively the correct location for IE9 32 bit , I think you should open Windows update > Installed updates & remove IE9 you will revert back to IE8 then check updates & choose IE9.

Hmm, I went to Internet Explorer in the 64-bit Program Files folder.
It looks like I have it back to normal now. It likes to change from 32-bit to 64-bit
But here's a thing I just noticed: Now if I open the 32-bit (Pinned to the left) it will open in another window...

Assuming you're opening the 32bit browser icon (and getting a 64bit browser), there can be a few reasons for this (all of them in the registry ). If you take a process monitor log while the problem is occurring (start procmon, open IE, save the procmon log to a .pml file) and post it somewhere, we can probably figure out why it's happening (and hopefully how to fix it).

It's just getting annoying. First 2 are 32-bit IE, last on the right is 64-bit.
If I open the one I got from Program Files(x86) and pin it, then open the other window it spawns, pin it and close it, then open that this is what happens. 32 > 32 > 64. ???
