I think you need to be sure you get an upgrade certificate when you get vista. It's not automatic.

If you specifically buy one that comes with a free upgrade, yes. I just bought my wife a new laptop, and specifically made sure it came with the free upgrade. You get a piece of paper in the box, to register with the OEM, and they will send you the upgrade disc on Oct 22nd. The free Vista upgrades were handled this way as well.

Just make sure you get the certificate and you can up grade to the same version. Which repeats what every one just said.

If they are selling it with the upgrade certificate, then go for it. If not, then wait 5 weeks and get Windows 7 when it is publicly available, and use the 90 day Enterprise RTM version of Windows 7 in the meantime.
