If I switch to AMD?

If I were to swap out my motherboard for an AMD board, and put in a Phenom II X6 BE, would my current RAM kit work in it, or are triple channel kits different from dual channel kits other than the triple having an extra RAM chip? I would be inclined to do this only if all I had to purchase would be a new motherboard and the Phenom II X6. I dont want to replace my RAM, and graphics card. I also heard the Phenom II X6 is a killer overclocker since it is multiplier unlocked.

Check the ram under tested for this wicked mobo I looked and it appears Kingston is listed but if these are your sticks you'll need to check!

Just use 2 sticks and you'll still get dual channel. If you want to install the 3rd stick, it will run 2 sticks in dual channel and 1 stick in single channel mode.

And BTW, not to sound like a d#ck or anything but, why would you want to move from a Core-i7 920 to a AMD Phenom II X6 XXXXT CPU?

Even a Phenom II X6 OC'ed to ~3.9GHz, would still have trouble catching up to a Core i7 920 @ stock speeds (that's how strong the Core i7 architecture really is).

You gotta remember, AMD K10 is nothing more than a tweaked version of the old K8 architecture from '03.

On the other hand, Nehalem (Bloomfield/Lynnfield) was built from the ground up not that while ago (~'08 IIRC).

Don't be fooled by the two extra physical cores of the X6 - it's still a downgrade from your current setup.

If I am not mistaken, that MOBO is an intel mobo- He was asking about AMD. I have a MSI MOBO and love it. If you want to go that route go with the MSI 890FXA - GD70. It will run the PhenomII real well, has excellent specs is expandable and I am sure your Ram will work with no problems. It would also future proof your rig somewhat. Just my opinion, but your current CPU is a very good one I have a X6 and love it. But if I had an i7, I think I would keep it, maybe use the BIG Bang MOBO suggested by linnemeyerhere in order to get more features like usb 3.0 and Sata 6Gb/s - which I think is where all of the future innovations are heading. This is offered in the FWIW dept. Just my opinion.

i7920 really ? thats like the chip of all chips and if you have the right ram from the jump it should be universal to the board you choose depending on the ram type listed of course

I want to know why you think the chip will benefit you if you looking for cooler running less heat i could understand but if you're looking for a boost unfortunatly it is in the wrong direction

now if you want to upgrade newboard change of ram if really needed and maybe a ssd would help you replacing the cpu will set the performance back a bit

If you were to do the above mentioned you would just be wasting money just because what ever forums you been reading weren't accurate enough

Adding some fuel to the fire : I recently switched from Intel to AMD and I am very happy. My only reason for switching? PRICE!

I am not a fanboy for either company just stating the fact that I am pleased with my new AMD processor.
