If I switch to AMD?

Adding some fuel to the fire : I recently switched from Intel to AMD and I am very happy. My only reason for switching? PRICE!

I am not a fanboy for either company just stating the fact that I am pleased with my new AMD processor.

That's understandable if you are upgrading from a lower processor to a higher one
but the man already has the top processor and he wants to get a lower one even though they claim similar performance which is not true intel users hyper threading to allow more bandwith amd doesnt have this feature

they have multi threads but not hyper threading to increase bandwith with that being said that i7 will still smoke us based on the speed of multi hyperthreads if that makes sense to any of you

I think he should just take a little more time and do more research I myself switched from intel to amd not only for the price but to try something new and unventured and when i switched i upgraded to a phenom II X 4 2.8 oc'ed to 3.22 from a P4 intel celeron 3.2 you can pretty much tell i made abetter choice from that perspective

There is nothing wrong with AMD processors...and many of us have probably used them in the past on machines where we wanted most bang for the buck.

My personal opinion is that bang-for-the-buck is still with Intel right now. While I know you can get AMD 6 core processors cheaper than Intel 6 cores...the fact remains that current quad core Intels outperform the AMD 6 core CPU's in most areas. So, unless you have a particular application that really benefits from more physical cores...you might not be getting most bang for the buck with the 6 core.

But for those who have AMD processors...rest assured you are just fine. I've owned many AMD's in the past....and I'm sure that I will have another one again in the future.

If I were to swap out my motherboard for an AMD board, and put in a Phenom II X6 BE, would my current RAM kit work in it, or are triple channel kits different from dual channel kits other than the triple having an extra RAM chip? I would be inclined to do this only if all I had to purchase would be a new motherboard and the Phenom II X6. I dont want to replace my RAM, and graphics card. I also heard the Phenom II X6 is a killer overclocker since it is multiplier unlocked.

Getting back to the original point, you'd be gipping yourself if you purchase a Phenom II X6 in place of your current Core i7 920. It's like saying that you have a Core i5 750 and you're going to replace it with a Core i5 660; you're taking a step back and to the side. Since you already have the 920, stick to it because replacing with the X6 is not really going to net you a performance in gain. In many benchmarks, you will actually lose performance.

A simple analogy in cars; you can take the 2011 Lincoln Towncar's Engine, a 4.6L 8-Cylinder engine versus the 2011 Lincoln MKS Engine, a 3.7L 6-Cylinder engine as examples. On the surface, you would be inclined to believe that the 8 cylinder engine would have more power based on the number of cylinders however, it only produces up to 240 horsepower. The 6-cylinder engine of the MKS produces 273 horsepower despite having 2 cylinders less as it's more efficient.

If you really feel that you must spend the money and you prefer the AMD 6-core, you can go for it but you're not going to gain anything from it. As far as your RAM, the only real difference with triple channel is the extra stick. As long as the motherboard you choose for the AMD supports DDR3 (whatever speed of DDR3 you have) RAM, you should be fine.

Windows i7 920, Man do what you want to do. Hell build a second AMD rig and run it side by side the Intel and see which OC's better. Intel is good AMD is good go with what makes you happy. Personally I don't have Intel money to spend so I love my AMD rig for cents on the dollar for what the top flight Intel rigs go for. You have other motives driving your decision, just don't let others tell you what to do read up ask around and make up your own mind. I say: "Overclock, Live long and Prosper" ! the Cheese

I agree, if you are set on building an AMD machine...go for it! We cant and shouldn't tell you how to spend your money. Everyone here just wants you to be aware the move to AMD will be a "downgrade" for you.

I have an AMD rig. it's my first, I have always been an Intel person but I am not a fanboy for either. If you were going to build an entirely new rig I mean case, MB,HD,PSU and all that goes in it, I might give you different advice. However, I believe all here are pretty much in agreement that you would be taking a step down from what you have.

Don't misunderstand, I love my rig and built it for two reasons - money and options. But the final choice is yours. You have to live with whatever you choose to do, just like everyone here does. So the best advice I can give you is do whatever will make you happy. After all, no mater what I think, you are the one who will be sitting behind it every day, so get what YOU want.

The validity of AMD performance vs price was not in question - downgrading from an existing quicker i7 setup to a slower AMD setup with confused expectations of superior performance from a slower setup, were.

No/old PC + New AMD upgrade = Bang for buck

Existing i7 + New AMD CPU & Mobo = Antithesis of bang for buck
