If Windows 7 has no IE in the EU

tory

Thanks ken ,

It is Tory - ( only one r) - unlike the wigs, the Tory party still exists and will be the next government.

I don't think he meant that - it makes no sense in the context of the sentence.

For what it's worth, I'd expect:

(1) IE8 available as a Windows Update, perhaps combined with a link to download on the desktop (via FTP or something similar)

(2) OEM's put on their own browser, or at least links to download

(3) Die hards will get their own browser on there anyway

(4) The EU may start mandating multiple browsers come with the OS, where users can choose which gets installed. Of course, they're then going to have issues drawing the line with what gets included and what doesn't. And they'll ultimately decide that it makes the most sense to just include IE by default, and give consumers the ability to uninstall it as they want. Kind of like MS wanted to do in the first place right now.

Sorry for all the confusion. Family thing. so I forgot most will not understand. TORRY from family History - King Geo, to Nathan Hale, John Paul Jones, Browns Ferry.
TORRY was a simple way of saying: dirty, rotten, known to be thief, scoundrel, traitor, spy for. ( we were also Irish) when drunk the story goes rather hard to understand, Great GrandPa, was so TORRY was the esy way. also GrandMa allowed no CURSING. passed thru time. and still today my grandkids understand TORRY.

Option two and three are plausible but why in the world would the EU do that. With option 2 they eliminate choice, the key factor in their case against Microsoft was the allegations of Microsoft removing their browser competition by stripling choice. Now how is it any better to let the manufacture choose? Because they made the machine so therefore they know the browser best for it? No it is because Microsoft has a big wallet and they are being targeted because they are the easiest to hit. Why isn't the EU suing Apple for Safari? Why aren't anyone complaining against linux distros for providing mostly firefox? Now I am not trying to parade around as a Microsoft fanboy but the suit is so one sided and unfair it is ridiculous and the only people being hurt by it are the people of the EU who are not technologically inclined to get their own browser by themselves. Option 4 is probably what will happen because they will release that they are going in a giant circle and just give up on trying to promote choice instead of eliminating choice

To the OP:

You don't need a browser to get a browser. You can just use the ftp function in dos.

I doubt most will be able to figure that out without internet access to start with. (How would you get the address' to start with for example!)

I got bored and tried this for DL'ing FF without a browser lol!
Paste into notepad and save as a .bat file:
Code:
FTP -i -s:"DL_FF.FTP" -A releases.mozilla.org
then paste this into a new txt file and save as 'DL_FF.FTP':
Code:
HASH
cd /pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.5/win32/en-GB/
BINARY
lcd c:\
mget *.exe
then run the .bat file to auto-download Firefox 3.5. for some reason it's touch and go wether it works though and when it does, FF 3.5 will be saved on your drive 'C'. :p

(I need a new hobby!)

EDIT: I would have done it for IE but cant find a decent 'trusted' ftp to use!

Of course this just proves the roadblock that will be encountered with someone in the EU that is basic at best on the computer who just wants to surf the net. What some people on the forums don't think about is that everyone is not a computer expert, most people are quite computer illiterate (I know I am a IT Professional who handles a Help Desk....you wouldn't believe the questions we get asked)

I honestly have to wonder why anyone would think that Microsoft should include any browser but IE with Windows 7. Why should they pre-package their product with the products of competitors? IE fills a need for most users. For me it is to grab the latest copy of Chrome or Firefox, or for that occasional page that won't render right in IE (I use IE Tabs but it does use the IE engine for the rendering).

For many home users though it is their main browser. If they want to use an alternate, no one's stopping them! There is nothing in the OS that prevents users from downloading an alternate browser! All adding IE to the default install does is make things easier for the new user.

Furthermore, I honestly can't see how bundling IE is monopolistic behavior? It's not like IE is actually winning the browser wars last I checked (from: Browser Statistics). I think Opera is b*ching because they put out a subpar product that hasn't gained marketshare over Firefox or IE, so they're looking at anything that could put a few more users in their pocket. Firefox isn't having any trouble at all competing in this market.

I have to wonder though, what's next? Is Hoyle going to demand trial editions of their card game software be included because MS is monopolizing the Solitaire and Freecell market? Seriously.

Now, there seems to be some 'supprise' at Europe not paying extra for Windows 7 E!

http://www.sevenforums.com/news/15438-europe-wont-pay-more-windows-7-really-2.html#post158222

I'm moving out of the EU, no lie this is people in the EU now being singled out. Others may now start to think "What's so special about them?" or "Poor sad lot, can't even get an internet browser" then laughing at us :p

Fine fine, I'll put a copy of IE on the CD too :P ... It'll delay the release by a week or so but I'll make sure you're taken care of!

It's not a question of 'I need someone to get IE for me' it's the fact that MS have caved in to EU demands. Anyone can get hold of a browser I just see no need to have to do the following...

1, Download IE8
2, Save to external HD
3, Install Windows 7 RTM
4, Run IE8 Install from external HD

Logic dictates that the easiest route is to only have to do step 3, sodding EU!! LOL

Oh I know! I was just making a joke on the ""Poor sad lot, can't even get an internet browser" then laughing at us" comment :)

I agree with you completely Orbital, it's a gigantic pain in the @#$% to have to jump through the hoops you're going to end up having to. Fortunately this is going to affect a small minority of customers in the EU from what I can figure. Most OEM boxes are going to come with IE installed as part of the set up process and most people that upgrade will already have IE on the box (I'd be surprised if Win7 upgrades removed existing IE installs). Small computer shops that custom build boxes will likely do a Windows Update on the box before hand and install IE8 as part of the process. This really only affects people like us who (re)build our machines from vanilla OS media.

If they're going to go this route though I think they need to require all installs of opera and firefox to include links to the installs of their competitors during the install process. Sound silly? Yeah I thought so :P
