I'm new to the SSD arena so I have a few uestions

ICIT2LOL I have actually opened quite a few and the magnets are Ok but the whole mechanism sueized me that it lasts as long as hard disks last.

I used to have an electronucs hobby which meant I fixed quite a few things and what I have realized is this: mechanical systems that have moving parts and electric motors fail a lot more frquently then the electronic components ( transistors , ca[citors...etc)

Yes and yes.

Just as with a standard drive. All things fail eventually. But the R/W cycle thing is vastly overblown and the drive could well last 10 or 20 years in normal operation. Or drop dead in 30 seconds. It's a tool meant to be used, so use it as you wish. If you have bad luck, buy another one. No need to treat it differently just because it's an SSD.

R/W cycles is not high on the list of things to consider on an SSD unless you have a very unusual situation where the drive is being pounded constantly, as it might in a corporate database setting.

It is very unlikely that you will ever reach that limit. You may want to read this:

In my opinion you can always get a bad SSD just like you can always get a bad hard drive.
It doesn't happen often for SSD or hard drives.

The odds are you will never wear one out.
SSD's are just as reliable if not more than a hard drive.

mohab I think you are down to the point to pick which SSD you want. Install it following instruction and enjoy the new SSD.

Like most electronic components, SSDs usually fail without warning or apparent cause. But conventional drives often do as well. Never rely on receiving any kind of warning whether it be from errors or SMART warnings. And this applies as much to new drives as those that are a few years old. Always have backups so you are prepared when a failure occurs.

SSDs can fail for many reasons other than wearing out due to reaching the write limit. Such limits do exist but they are difficult to reach under anything like normal conditions. And often a drive is replaced because it is too small for current needs.

As everyone has mentioned, a Solid State Drive will smoke a hard drive.

But you want one that is reliable and 100% healthy out of the box.

I Agree with this Samsung Corsair OCZ i have used all these Brands particular to Samsung though they seem to be best bang for your buck

Yep well I said just what everyone is saying a but earlier it is like having a cheap Hyundai car or an expensive Mercedes either can breakdown because of many factors so it is with hard drives. The bottom line is really luck if the truth were known.

My pick are the Samsung's and followed closely by the SanDisk's which I haven't heard much about but the one I have had is still mega quick and it is now three years old.

Now I have done a bit of reading on Kingston products in particular their RAM as I want some more in this machine and I was surprised to see they are the largest manufacturer of memory in the world and yet their SSD's get not a great deal of mention.

As for that country I would guess New Zealand as I know they pay over the odds for computer parts - well compared to Australia where stuff is not that cheap either. I envy the US folks for their access to cheap gear but I suppose I shouldn't say it is cheap because I don't know what the equivalent individual in my occupation would be earning there. Just a by the by I watch Judge Judy and Hard Core Pawn sometimes and am amazed at what pitiful amounts of money are involved when people are selling or suing for money.

Mmm that is rather impressive going on the sales pitch and even at slightly lower R/W it would still be quick. Haven't been able to locate it out here but I guess it must be available somewhere but I wonder at what price because as I mentioned earlier we pay premium prices for computer parts compared to the US for example.

Are you sure. What about OCZ, Crucial, Mushkin and the others. I know some Mushkins have Intel controllers. And OCZ was probably one of the first to make SSDs.

The controllers are installed in a small wooden shed out back with a sign over the door that read Intelephone, but the ephone paint chipped off and they never fixed it due to lack of funds.

Kingston Technology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia because Kingston according to this only came about in 1987 and I knew about SanDisk which is one I absolutely trust from way back before then (ie. I always get SanDisk for the camera's).

But I suppose it is like a lot of stuff we use like PSU's for an example the number of manufacturers for the Corsair range is quite astounding eh?

Whs, read speeds of up to 1400MB/s and write speeds hitting 1000MB/s is amazing!
