Imaging with free Macrium

   Information

This tutorial shows imaging with free Macrium Version 5.0. If you are still using Macrium Version 4.2, go to this Vimeo site where the tutorial of that version is stored.

The Video does not show the recovery part because I have no setup to screen capture it. But Keith (Kado) made this excellent recovery tutorial with text (but no sound) that he captured from a virtual partition.

   Warning

Note that the external disk to which you image must be formatted in NTFS. A disk that is formatted in Fat32 will accept an image, but the recovery programs cannot restore that image. You can, however, mount (open) a Fat32 image as VHD.

   Note
The production of the WinPE recovery CD (which is highly recommended) may take up to 3 hours because Macrium needs to download the 1.7GB WAIK (Windows Application Installation Kit). For your convenience I have uploaded a ready made .iso of the WinPE recovery disc. That can be downloaded in appr. 8 minutes which clearly beats the WAIK download. Once you downloaded and unzipped the folder, you can burn it directly to a CD with e.g. ImgBurn.

Here is the link to my Skydrive site.

Here is an alternate link from FileSwap (courtesy of Gary - Britton30)

I draw your attention to the fact that this WinPE CD can also be used to make images. That may be convenient in case you do not want to install Macrium on your PC.

This video tutorial explains the full cycle of the imaging process which is:

· Initial setups
· Image definition
· Image scheduling
· Image production

The imaging program that was used for this tutorial is free Macrium. But the basic principles are the same for other imaging programs although the user interface will be different.

This video runs for appr. 7 minutes.
There is a related thread on the Vista forum which gives a brief introduction to Macrium followed by a discussion.
You can download the free Macrium edition from here.

Note: If you have a problem with the loudness of the sound output of the video, check the "Loudness Equalization" box in your Playback device. It is under the 'Enhancements' tab.

In what way doesn't it work?

I've tried everything, restoring a image, cloning a partition. In all cases the new drive that I want to have windows boot from, doesn't boot, I get an error "a device driver is inaccessible" with a type of cx00ecd error. I have two other installs of Windows which are on two different drives, two different partitions. They both work, I don't want either of those to be the Windows boot partition. I want the new drive which is giving me an error to be the Windows boot partition. When I boot into Windows PE 3.1 and I select the option to fix "windows boot errors" the new drive I want to boot too, is not listed, only a USB drive and one of the drives with a windows boot partition.

The data that I lost is gone, because I over-written it with a backup of another drive therefore the partitions were not shifted, they were just over written. I'm over that, so that is not a concern anymore. The concern is getting the new drive to boot into windows, then I can get things in order. I have contacted Macrium, and twenty four went by with no reply, I don't know why this is causing this much problems, something is not registering with the MBR and I have no way of fixing this. I have the option to ReDeploy but that doesn't work either, I tried that option hoping the "a device driver is inaccessible" error would be resolved if some drivers were feed into the drive that I want the windows partition to boot from, unfortunately it didn't work.

Do you have the 100MB System Partition and if so are you restoring that as well?

From my knowledge Macrium was suppose to create the 100 MB System Partition when I restored the image, and it didn't. Windows doesn't boot to the new HDD, it will boot to either of the other two HDD with the Windows Partition, but not the new HDD that I want to boot to Windows. I don't see a 100 MB boot partition in Disk Management or Macrium Pro, I don't think I have one, unless it's hidden where I'm unaware of ?

You should set up the partitions beforehand then reimage into the system reserved if you have one then the OS partition.
If you want to keep system reserved then I would create a partition of size 200MB and not 100MB.
You can also dispense with it:
1) On your new HDD create a single partition then reimage the OS partition image to it. The image cannot be larger than this partition.
2) Your computer will not boot. So using the Bootable Partition Wizard, mark this partition active.
3) Then using a Windows System Repair CD run the repair function 3 times, rebooting each time. This will install all the boot file info onto your single active partition.

Then your PC should boot.

I solved it, everything was disarranged. I lost some data, but not that much, now I can proceed forward and prevent this little mishap from happening again in the future :)

Issue with Macrium Reflect

Hi.

I have issue with free Macrium Reflect.

It tells me this:

Code:
(Gathering writer metadata...)
(Waiting for the asynchronous operation to finish...)
Error during the last asynchronous operation.
- Returned HRESULT = 0x80042318
- Error text: VSS_E_WRITER_INFRASTRUCTURE
- Please re-run VSHADOW.EXE with the /tracing option to get more details
- Backup failed. Mark all writers as not succesfully backed up...
Completing the backup (BackupComplete) ...

ERROR: COM call "m_pVssObject->BackupComplete(&pAsync)" failed.
- Returned HRESULT = 0x80042301
- Error text: VSS_E_BAD_STATE

And I cannot find the vshadow, exe file.

What to do?.

If that is a wrong place to ask, please tell me it, thanks! :D

I also ran a chkdsk /r and scf /scannow

Nothing helped :-(

I use a Seagate ST1000DL 002-9TT153 SATA DiskDrive.

It has the following partitons.

And i want to back up C first and after D, and when running, I will setup differential.

I would start up a full backup of C, when I got the issue.

I also would try Windows Backup, and here I think the culprit is to be found.
