Hello there. I have been a Win 7 user since last Saturday, so I am new here! I have been setting and tweaking my new PC. I managed to sort most of my problems (in part thanks to this forum), but here is one left: my mouse seems to have lost its accuracy in all text input areas and all programs. I have the greatest trouble placing my text select pointer in the correct spot. Let's say I want to place it behind the letter "W" and click just on the bottom of the second V, the pointer starts blinking BEFORE the letter. That happens in any text edit program, whether writing an email in my mail client, Notepad or in a web form in any browser. Or is it yet another of these Windows 7 "enhancements"? Or maybe there is a registry magic trick for that?

I just tried this and noticed the same behavior. I think it's better to try to click between the letters - or simply click on the letter following the W.
It seems that clicking on any letter places the cursor right before that letter, and this appears to be by design.

nondisposable,
Welcome to SF. I'm not having this issue but I have upgraded my mouse to a G9 laser mouse with extremely high resolution. I have to say this feature isn't just for gaming and I love it for document work. Are you working with a premium mouse?

Thanks for the welcome. I must admit I have preferred a basic Microsoft USB wired mouse, fearing that a Ferrari-style mouse may be unreliable... I have tried several mice of the same style (USB wired) but all have the same trouble.

Having spent about $2,000 on my new PC, I am willing to commit $100 or more if needed for a little mouse... provided that solves my problem. I'll try.

I doubt very much that a different mouse will have any effect - it's a question of software design, i.e. how Windows interprets a click on a letter and decides to place the cursor.

I'm sorry if you were expecting a more positive response, but if I may ask...do you think you can just get used to the way it is?

Personally I never had an issue with how mouseclicks place the cursor...it's just a matter of habit/knowing what to expect.

I agree with Corazon, rather than purchase a different mouse and hoping it works differently, perhaps you could adjust to a different way of doing things?

Was the behavior different in previous versions of Windows? I have always clicked between the letters so I didn't notice any difference when moving to Win 7.

Built my first computer (8Mhz 8088cpu, 640K RAM, 20MB HDD, 2 360K floppy drives) in 1985 and have been building them for myself, relatives and friends ever since.
I discovered this "nuance", shall we call it, early on. What's weird is that I found that changing the mouse pointer scheme would actually change the accuracy of the pointer as well (sometimes for the better, and sometimes worse). I found the default scheme had a text pointer that was a bit too thick and would often produce the inaccuracies described here (I would click somewhere between letters where I expected it to go and it would go slightly to the right or left of it instead). By playing around with different pointer schemes, I found that the "system scheme" actually produced the accuracy I was accustomed to and the text pointer, more often that not, ended up going where I intended. You might try messing with different styles to see how it suits you.

That seemed to work for me, but YMMV.

That's an interesting approach, thanks for sharing FliGi7. :)

Perhaps the real answer lies in the mouse control panel, specificially the pointer speed and whether or not Enhance pointer precision is checked.

Wow I see what you mean and that is odd. I looked all through the MS mouse settings and there isn't a section for tuning the accuracy of the pointer.

Why is the text pointer so large? On my system it's much smaller and thinner than that. I use the defaults, do yoou ha it customized to be that large?

When I asked W7 for help it kept referring to screen resolution, but surely it can't be that. Not even older drivers create this kind of issue. The only thing like this has been with PDA's and tablets as they want you to calibrate them. Very odd and some what annoying.
