in-place upgrade fails - where are log files?

This is a little off subject but this is where my problems started. For some tme I have had issues getting my latest version of Nero installed. I finally found a Nero registry fix file and ran it. Unfortunately that's where my problems started (although I was able to install Nero:)). I noticed some icons were missing, but other issues started a few days later. Like I was runniing some updates to software that uses Adobe Air, and the errors reported that the previous verson could not be uninstalled. Anyway, I realized I had a major problem. Unfortunately, by the time I figured this out my image backup before that date had been deleted (I can't save but about 3 versions).

So I thought I would just deal with doing an in-place upgrade and the inconvienence is far better than a reinstall. I have so much software installed for my job that it would literally take me a solid week plus to get it all reinsitalled and then I know I would miss a bunch that I don't use often.

I have tried an in-place upgrade several times and everytime it fails on the last step, and it just reboots back to saying there's an error and it can't continue. I start up the disk and go into repair and then to command prompt. I can't figure out where the upgrade log fiiles are at so someone can see them and clue me into what the errors are.

Can someone tell me how I can find them so I can copy them somewhere else, do a rollback and fix the issues (after I know what to fix)?

Thanks for the help, I appreciate any and all info.

Hi JBatten & welcome to sevenforums.

I'll try to help you.

Do you still wish to do repair install/in place upgrade?

Please run SURT & post CheckSUR.log located at: C:\Windows\Logs\CBS

It takes a while to complete, let it run. If you get an error post it.

Thank you WBen, can I run this from a USB, since right now I can't boot into Windows without rollback? Or do I rollback then run this?

Thanks so much for the help.

No, at least I don't think so, never actually tried it. SURT is a KB (update from Microsoft) Logically, I don't believe you can install KB's from outside windows, with the exception of Slipstream Win7 DVD. That includes KB's, however, if you ever need to do repair install, slipstream process alters files on disk or USB & most often repair install fails, or causes unwanted issues.

Roll back & run SURT. Probably issues there.

Also may have components hive corruption preventing successful completion of repair install.

Been having issues with e-mail post notifications, notified Brink (Administrator) tried some suggested fixes, no luck.

On the NERO, better to uninstall than try fix, with program other that windows uninstall programs, I like Revo Uninstaller Pro. If you install program & configure it through Revo, it logs & saves everything during the installation/configure process, then if you need or want to uninstall, you have a log that Revo uses to remove the program, registry modifications, etc. By the way, if you install a program through Revo that has trial period & it expires, you can uninstall with Revo, reinstall again, & trial period will be reinstated. This is possible because Revo removes file, usually registry entry that contains date/time your trial started.

Also, if you had created restore point prior to trying fix, you could have used windows restore (I don't because to many times it fails miserably) I use AOMEI backupper to do full System Images & incremental or differential backups regularly. Simple interface, don't need extensive knowledge to use, pretty straight forward. AOMEI version I use is free. I like FREE. :D

OK here's the Sert log file. Show's no errors, I hope you have some more ideas for me to try.

As far as Nero, I had already done uninstalls on everything weeks back, but I still had issues. Yes, I made a huge mistake in not taking a restore point.

Thanks.
