That's actually a darn good question
Seems the default is 120 dpi or ppi I don't believe it matters which file type either,
Even jpeg's would be at the same dpi default,
Look forward to input/ registry edit posts

I tried the WinKey+PrtScn tip - it saved the full screen image to Pictures\Screenschots (#).pmg
I opened it up in Gimp and the file was 200x200 ppi
That saves a step (pasting it in an image editor).

The Ctrl+PrtScn with a paste into Gimp - same thing 200x200 ppi

Snipping tool only gets me 96x96 ppi

Now if there was only a way to do window captures with the WinKey (WnKey+Alt+PtScn doesn't work)

Can't rep you on this - already tipped your scales on a different post.

Or any other decent imaging program too -- THE GIMP / PHOTOSHOP etc

However you still can't capture at more resolution than the screen delivers !!! You can though "Upsample" with programs like Photoshop -- for smallish captures the Up-rezzing is fine but don't expect the quality of a 4K movie !!!.

(An image file captured by say a camera is different in the sense that the resolution will depend on the device NOT the monitor - but a screen capture whatever software is used only can capture at the screen resolution which on a laptop usually at 768 X 1366 is the best you can do without manipulating the image further).

Just for clarity, my external monitor's resolution is 1600 x 900 dpi

My screen capture using the PrtScrn key was 200 x 200 ppi,
and 96 ppi using the snipping tool

Now that you made me think of it - 200 is the new image default ppi.

The Winkey+PrtScrn seems to default at 200 ppi

I opened a new image in Gimp, told it to use 600 ppi
Opened another new image and told it to use 300 ppi

then pasted the clipboard into each new image

I can't see any difference other than the thumbnails (snip taken in the same folder - extra large icons view)

Here's why I asked.


I'm working in Windows Move maker Version 2012, Build 16.4.3528.0331, and version 6.0.

I'm a music composer. I want to create movies of music scores, capturing each page with the snipping tool, and placing them in Movie Maker with an mp3 or .wav file of the music's playback.

I've done that, but the page .png files are very blurry on publication. In Movie Maker, the images seem OK. How do I make them sharp?

Here's what I've tried:
* Same problem occurs in the Movie Maker version I mentioned above, and in Movie Maker 6.0.
* Same problem occurs whether I create a .png or a .jpg of each page.
* I've also tried various resolutions--for the home computer, YouTube, and Facebook, and at others resolutions listed, including "save movie for high-definition display).
* I've also tried 4:3 and 16:9 ratios.

Still getting blurry pages. How do I get sharp images?

You can sharpen images with most picture viewing programs - e.g. Fast Stone Image Viewer or the Microsoft Office Picture Manager.

Aha!

Video and pics - MM v6 is a better pgm in my opinion. MS really dumbed it down in Essentials 2012.

You're on the right track - matching the pictures resolution to the video. Small pictures import better, full screen not so good.

I've always had the same problem importing images to MM. I forget if Cyberlink Power Director did a better job.
You can try it for 30 days to see if that is better - it's not free though (I linked the cheapest, but there are other versions). Note that I'm not suggesting you buy a certain program, I only suggest free applications or a trial to test.

For the movies I'm making, I'm creating PDFs first, then making .png files from the PDFs. I see a difference in the .png files that I render and those that are rendered in online services--the ones from online services are about 30-40 Kb bigger than those I produce on my computer, and the online ones are sharper. Why is that? How can produce equally sharp PNG files on my machine? What is an online pdf to png service doing that I'm not doing on my machine?

The movies I created with the online png files at 1920x1080 are pretty good--much sharper than the 640x480 movies MM offers as one option.

I work in a music notation program called "Finale." The music pages contain many hidden designations for playback that don't appear in the printed music. For this reason, I print to PDF first before making the PNG files for the movie. The hidden items don't appear in the PDFs.

I'm not sure if I'd call this thread solved, but here's what I've done to decrease the blurriness. Perhaps my procedures can help others.

First, I turned my 24-inch monitor to a vertical position and brought up the individual music pages. I enlarged them to fit the screen. Then I saved each page as a PDF. I changed the default 600 dpi to 1200 dpi. I think the larger PDF and higher dpi helped. I used a free online service to convert the PDFs to PNG files. I used these PNGs in the video. I published the movie with a custom resolution (that I downloaded from a helpful site) at 1920x1080. The default resolution (for viewing on one's computer), which I initially used, is a paltry 640x480.

All this produced a video, and videos to come, that will be greatly improved from my initial effort.

Seems like the long way around the barn to me,
Seems you just need a better image editing program as already discussed,
Making a new project in this said imaging program beit free ones like Gimp/ paint.net....
Starting this new project as a 300-600 ppi or dpi/ resolution then copy to clipboard and pasting in that editing program will produce the paste with that resolution you start your project with,
