Solved increasing ram speed set channel to single

have RAM that appears to be clocked at 1333 is there a guide or resource anywhere on what I can do to get this up to 1600?

System isn't in my specs.

here are specs:
Case: Rosewill BLACKHAWK Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD

CPU: AMD FX-6200 Zambezi 3.8GHz (4.1GHz Turbo)
Heatsink: COOLER MASTER V8 RR-UV8-XBU1-GP 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler

RAM: Patriot Viper 3 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 15000)

GPU: SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5

So, I was told that I could set it up in BIOS and I went about doing that.

I was able to get the RAM to go to 1600, but I couldn't get it to 1866. got a boot failure with an HT limit warning.


Now... 1600 is fine and the winsat mem score is higher, but I had the RAM in Dual channel and now it is showing up in Single channel. Performance-wise, it seems better, but I don't know if getting it back to dual will make it even better....

Is there a way to get this back into Dual channel?

I thought having the proper ( or all ) slots populated with the same size and speed, automatically brought on dual, triple, quad channel mode ?

Well what you need to do is first check memory overclock limitation on stock voltage

from there when you overclock ram or use FSB I'm not sure if this is the exact method that you're using but you should see what is the HT norm and the limit for a overclock

say for instance if you got your ram to 1600 from 1333mhz you most likely have a high HT because of the memory being uped when you are doing that it is best to set the HT lower so as the ram goes up in MHz the HT will go along with it but if it is pre adjusted let's say in the middle for example

AMD limit is 2800mhz but........... you wouldn't want to run it that high because it actually has a reverse effect you would want it reduced to somewhere round 2400mhz

that way when you are oc the ram you will get maybe a .50 ratio on HT that will put you somewhere round 2480 to 2500mhz in the safe zone if this makes sense to you

yeah... i didn't move the ram physically. just changed stuff in BIOS so I didn't expect the single channel to appear...

I set AMP to enabled first off. I had some issues when I was trying to get it set up. there is another setting for quick settings and there wasn't a selection for 1600 so I selected 1866 and got errors on boot. I set that back to auto and then changed the DRAM speed manually to 1866 and that didn't work.

I got it to 1600 by setting the DRAM speed to manual and changing it from 4x to 5.3x I think. that is all I had to do.

I also enabled power management (as the BIOS had a huge blinking red text to do so)

FYI its an Award BIOS v.F8

You might want to consult Essenbe with this Bios they are more familiar with how Intel bios work

I havn't had a Intel rig for some time let me message a few people and see if they can better explain to you what you could do

sort of... this is the first time I have tried to increase ram speed as I purchased good ram, but have it clocked low at 1333. and the first time I have had to deal with HT errors. the mobo and ram can handle 1866 so the only thing i could think of was voltage or the fsb. I am not as familiar with this for ram though so I'm not sure what to change and by how much. I guess I will have to play with it some more. I will probabl reset it to default and just change the ram speed to see if it stays in dual channel. maybe one of the settings disabled it...

Ok I am confused because you are in another thread saying your overclocking AMD machine if that is so I can help you out I just saw your system specs oops lol

yes AMD machine I will look back, but i don't remember mentioning Intel.

If it is AMD FX it should be a way you can set the ram to 1866 already if that is the ram you have

depending on the color of your ram slots if you are running single channel they are installed wrong also you can only get dual channel from AMD

If you have black and blue slots the black slots are dual channel the blue would be single

thanks for helping sorry for confusion.

when i built the rig, i put the sticks in and they showed up as dual channel (see my first cpu-zbefore picture) after upping the speed, they show up as single channel.

just looked...all slots are black 2 sticks are in first two slots closest to cpu/heatsink

The first slot with one stick is fine take the one out next to it and put it to the next one you have to go 1 skip then 1

then it will be dual channel that could be why you didn't see that 1866 setting

looked at the manual. looks like they are in the right slots. I have them in channel 0 slots DDR3-2 and DDR3-4
(I can definitely set them up like you are saying and the manual says DDR3-1 and DDR3-3 are preferred)

strike that. for dual, they have to be in different channels
