I currently have the Geforce 8600 GT 256mb <<(i think that's the VRAM not sure tho)

i can't run crysis on medium without lag....

my friend has a GeForce 8600 GT 1GB and can run crysis on High without any lag, and yes i have been to his house and personally played on his computer it is true! Don't tell me I'm lying i checked everything.

Sooo, i can easily buy the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB but is it worth it? will it really make it so i can play crysis atleast on MEDIUM without lag on a low resolution like 1280x800 or even less. It's only $50 so even if i see a slight difference i would still buy it.

Thanks (sorry for my noobyness)

Yes his card would make a substantial difference. other things to consider are your interenet connection vs his, you cpu and ram vs his. If all other things are equal and its on ly $50 difference its well worth it

save up a bit longer for a better card, and play on high detail at full 1400x900.

+1 buy a new card. at least in the early 9 series, with at least 512MB
a GeForce 9500GT w/ 1GB will only cost you ~$50-60. it's cheap, yet it will last a little while longer. 8XXX cards are pretty well dead, as far as support. unless it's an 8800GTX-OC-WTFBOOM. which a lot more expensive.

The difference between them is likely more then compatibilty, I'm not a guru with hardware or anything but I know that the difference is a lot more then that. Think of it this way;

8xxx was made way back when?
9xxx is more recent and has more recent technology implemented into it.

Though when you say interested in the card what do you mean? I have a desktop that could use a card. =P

I GB ram on a 8600GT is like putting lipstick on a pig, looks good but doesn't mean anything. That card isn't powerful enough to take advantage of it, and is hampered even more by the 128 bit memory bus.

I am with the others, save up and get a better card. You're also going to have to save up for a new power supply unless you replaced the 300W one that came in your Gateway, as it would likely fall over dead if you tried to put anything more on it.

You can buy a regular 9800GT 512 for like 100 bucks anymore... No reason to get a old card like the 8600.....

As for the poster who said the 9500GT... Id rather have an 8600GT that a 9500GT. No question.

Ok,
The difference between the 9 series and 8 series is actually less then what you think. 8 series can behave like a 9 if your willing to play with overclocking. Way back when? i got my 8800gtx a year ago. It was mad money. And it still plays everything i throw at it.
New is not allways better. Your just paying for a bit more clock speed and memory thats it. Check out benchmarks. Some 8800GTX. ( EVGA for eg) is still outperforming a lot of new 9 series

From my experience, it's the letters after the model number that are the real indicators of performance.

For example, an 9800GS is likely going to be outperformed by an 8800GTX. All things being equal, a 9800GTX should perform better than an equivalent 800GTX. But just because a card is 9000 something...doesn't mean it will always outperform an 8000 something.

indeed. but a 9500GT is (still) a quarter of the price of an 8800GTX. which was one of the OPs main concerns.

All of this sounds great, and i learned a lot from all of your posts. But tbh i dont play a lot of graphics intense games like crysis DAILY. And on top of that im just mowings lawns haha. I make about $75 a week, school starts tomorrow so ive spent a lot on clothing and other things. I really just want to play crysis on MEDIUM with no lag. Maybe some time in the future i can bye a 9800 with a good power supply but atm i think ima stick to the 8600 1g since i bought a $50 prepaid visa card to spend on ebay.

Another thing is i have to wait a week because paypal took $1 away from that prepaid card when i added it...and what do u know i fall short literally 12 cents from the geforce 8600 gt 1GB....

Don't be surprised if you see little to no improvement in anything with the 1 GB version of that card. More memory on the card will not make it any faster, and about the only thing it will help with is that more textures can be loaded into the cards memory.

The $1 will come back. PayPal dips the card to validate. Because it is a pre-paid card, contact PayPal email to expedite.

With all honesty, the 8600GT with 1GB probably runs crysis on medium for your friend becuase his full computer specs are higher. You will not see a huge improvement as the rest of your system is a huge bottleneck to a game like crysis. Specifically the processor.

That is much good enough. My processor is still the default for this 5 year old computer: AMD Phenom 3100+ ~1.80GHz. Mine is horrible! I'm surprised I can play such games on this.
