Insert sound card into PCI Express 2.0 slot possible?

Hello everyone,

I am currently sitting here with a dilemma. The problem I am facing takes back two weeks where I got my new graphic card MSI 560Ti. I have a CoolerMaster HAF 922 case, my PSU is relatively small but compared to my older graphic card the new one is absolutely massive. I also uses Asus P6T Deluxe v2 Mobo which has 3 PCI-E 2.0 slots which I found out recently. They are placed in this order from left to right; 2xPCI-E 2.0 slots, 2x PCI slots, 1x PCI-E 2.0 slot.

I noticed that my card turns out to be at 90 degrees when I'm running a game for instance because there is too little space between the graphic card and PSU which makes it very little to no airflow in between.
I decided to put my graphic card into the stand alone slot PCI-E 2.0 to create some space. But I have to sacrifice my sound card which I can't put it into the PCI slot no longer.
Also the sound card technically should be able to fit into a PCI-E 2.0 slot correct me if I'm wrong, but it doesn't reach out of the edge on the motherboard, what should I do?

No it shouldn't as they are two completely different interfaces,

Have you tried it with the sound card in the second PCI slot to see how it affects the video card temps? Could also try the sound card in the first PCI slot witth the video card in the second/middle PCI-E slot.

Failing all that it is either drop the sound card (which one by the way?) and use onboard, or get a PCI-E sound card that can then be put in any of the available PCI-E slots.

Hi thanks for quick reply,

I started off by using the middle PCI-E slot, but it's just too tiny space between them..
I drew a rectangle on that picture to show how much space my card will take, and it looks like if I insert my PCI sound card right in front of the GPU it will completely block the fans. I can't even imagine what will happen next, but no I haven't tried yet.

My soundcard is a Creative Sound blaster X-Fi Fidelity, nothing fancy I bought it for 2 and half years ago

Creative should have been drawn and quartered for ever releasing that card and calling it a X-Fi. It is nothing more than a renamed Audigy SE that gets to use some of the X-Fi software.

The only good thing about it in this instance is that it is a half height/low profile card and shouldn't block the video card too much if it is in the second PCI slot with the video card in the first/top PCI-E slot. If it does impact on the video card's temps then the only two options are,

1. Pull the card and go with onboard sound.

2. If onboard sound doesn't cut it for you, then replace the card with a PCI-E card that can then go in the last PCI-E slot (and yes a PCI-E x1 card will work in a PCI-E x16 slot).

Also I never used the onboard sound channel but the software still works.. what exactly is the difference and profit to have an sound card?
