install problems

i know my other thread was moved.. those bsod's were when i had windows up and running... now i cant get it installed.

ive gone through the suggestions listed on the help list, and i just cant get it to install properly now

when i try to boot from the HDD i get "BOOTMGR is missing - Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"

when i boot from the dvd drive (windows 7 x64 home oem) it boots up, trys to install windows and gives me the files missing or corrupt error

im kinda lost.

Where did you get Win7? It sounds like you burned it yourself and either the ISO or burn is bad.

Try loading ISO into ImgBurn to Verify Disk, make sure it says Bootable in text at left, then insert DVD to Verify against ISO.

Try burning another DVD at 4x speed using ImgBurn. Or you can write to USB flash stick: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2432-usb-windows-7-installation-key-drive-create.html

what is imgburn? are these programs i can run on this XP laptop? i dont have a dvd burner (except the one connected to the computer im trying to install win7 on)

Im running diskpart > clean all right now - seems like its going to take a while on my 1TB drive - when that is done, what do you guys recommend? Will I need to manually create a partition for windows, like the linked tutorial suggests?

Don't try again to install to the entire 1TB space, create a space no bigger than 100GB to install Windows 7 to, sometime the install chokes on so big a space to install to; just follow Step Two in the tutorial.



Be advised, the "clean all" will take close to 4 hours or more to complete, leave it alone and let it finish, you will get a notice in diskpart when it's done.

ok ill create a partition to install windows on, what size do you recommend? I can trim it down to size later on correct? Would it be worth making it large enough to encompass all my applications as well, or leave it for only the OS?

I've got 4 hours to figure this out, haha

I would set it at no more than 100GB so the Master File Table isn't put too far out in the middle of the Hard Disk Drive (HDD); as you say you can always make it larger if needed.

and would i want to use this partition to install my applications once i get windows installed? or would this partition be only for the OS and then I would use another for everything else..?

im sorta new to this whole scene, now that ive built my first machine im trying to learn everything i can.. you guys are a great help

A good approach is to make a 100gb partition for OS and programs, then put your User folders in a separate partition or HD. This allows you to save a WIn7 backup image of OS without having to lard it up with files, which you can keep backed up more often.

Then if Win7 ever becomes irreparable, you only need to boot DVD or Repair CD to reimage to the OS partition, and latest User files are all waiting in place.

yes that sounds like a very good idea, the OS and applications partition will be the C: drive, and then i will have a D (or whatever) drive that will store my media, etc...

so when clean all finishes on my hard drive will i need to create both of those partitions? a 100 gb one and a 900 gb one?

edit: also, when the clean finishes should I continue with the install from the DVD, or should i shut it down and remove all but 1 stick of ram and try the install? Right now i have all 4 sticks installed.

You can use booted DVD Custom>Drive Options to create the partitions, then format both before installing to first partition.

Just ignore the 100mb boot partition it places in the first slot as it is useful if you need to boot into Repair Console using F8 Advanced Boot Tools, instead of just using DVD or Repair CD.

If you don't do "Step Two" below you will get the dreaded 100MB boot partition even if you use the "Drive Options" during the install to create and format a partition to install to.

why would i want the dreaded 100MB boot partition? As in why would i need the advanced f8 tools, rather than just using the dvd?

Some like the convenience. It is up to you.

You can avoid the 100mb SysReserved partition while using the DVD Drive Options to partition by changing the size of the 100mb partition to 100gb to install Win7 upon, then making the second partition (intended for Win7) whatever size you want to use as data partition.

Or use DISKPART commands from BFK's tutorial's partitioning step here SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

Or use free Partition Wizard bootable CD which is a great tool to have around.

i have the disc, id rather just have a 100gb partition for windows without the 100mb partition.. when i use diskpart to create the 100gb partition, the rest of the space will be unallocated space and i will use the windows disc management (or free partition wizard) to create the second partition for the unallocated space once windows installs?

also, should i go ahead with the install once it is done with the clean all and i create my partition? or should i remove some ram? how many? i currently have 4 2gb sticks installed.

edit: before when trying to install i was getting the 0x80070570 error.. thats why i did the clean all in the first place

just trying to get this all figured out before i start, i want to do it right.

a few questions.. should i remove some ram? should i check anything in the bios? what if i get the 0x80070570 error again? should i remove my wireless keyboard/mouse? should i unplug my lan cable? should i just go ahead with the install?

What is the exact wording of the error? This error is different than the one in your original post.

If wiping the HD doesn't help, Test your RAM with memtest86 for 5-6 passes. then remove all but 2gb of RAM.

Disconnect any USB devices or other HD's to try install.

CHeck for newer BIOS version update, set SATA controller in BIOS to AHCI first, then IDE if neccessary.
