Hello, new here first post.

I have a new SDD for my w7 computer.

I want to boot from SSD and use HDD for everything else.

I don't want to do a reinstall of w7.

Need step by step instructions.

I know how to physically install the SSD.

Don't want to loose my programs. Do have my docs, music, pics. backed up to an external drive.

Thanks for any help.

You can probably do it by either imaging or cloning.

Post a screen shot of Windows Disk Management.

A few questions:

How large is the SSD?

How large is the HDD?

How much space is occupied on your current C partition on the HDD?

Is your data also on this C partition as of right now?

You say you want to boot from the SSD. Do you also want your applications to be on the SSD?

If I understand correctly, you want to keep all data on a standard hard drive---none of it on the SSD?

I now see I should post more information, not used to forums. New SSD is installed. Already tried the clone thing. I know I did stuff wrong. I want to start over. With step by step directions. Erase what I did and start again.

L is a clone of C?
Disk1-SYSTEM is a clone of Disk0-SYSTEM?

Yes it is. I did something very wrong. Willing to start all over again including removing the SSD, and start over with good directions.

Was the partition where SSD_C is now already called L PRIOR to last cloning?
So was it called L at time of starting the clone? I hope not

Disk was from Macrium iso file that I burned with imgburn. Got the elevated command prompt on screen. Can't post on two lines as you did, or don't know how to. No it wasn't that's new there was no L. What I did was cloned system and C to SSD . That's all I did.

Do #11 so we can troubleshoot in case of problems. Is that disk bootable? Try it as a test.

Very confused here, as you can see. Was on another site where one of your members goes. WHS, Wolfgang. Saw that I probably should have disconnected my HDD during the cloning process. I didn't. I want to start anew. Appreciate your help.

You can't disconnect during clone.... do you want to clone a disconnected disk ;-)
After cloning.... the bootmenu (even the cloned) and stuff in registry still point to old disk!!!! Imaging and restoring (without the source attached) will fix that automagically.

But you did clone.... I'll tell you how to fix the few problems. Did you make the system repair disc already? Detach the old disk from system. So physically disconnect it! Now boot from system repair disc and do a "startup repair" 3 times with reboots in between. then boot normally (old HDD stiil disconnected). Post results

I did make the disk. What you want me to do is going to take some time. It's the desktop that I am now using. I don't want to lose your help, or take up your time while I am doing this. Could I do it tomorrow, can get another computer to use in the meantime. and, then post results.

Ok. Thank you. will do what you have said in previous post. Disk is made. Just takes me awhile to take computer apart. I'm almost 70 years young. Hands and fingers don't operate as they did awhile ago. I will be here and post results when task assigned by you is fully accomplished. Thank you again.

Take your time. It's quite easy btw. This old guy is 54 years young btw. Be sure to keep the old HDD detached during this test.
