If it is an external USB drive, MS has specifically precluded installing Win7 to a USB external drive.

edit: I see you fixed it IDE>SATA. Others with this error may find it will boot up leaving the install disk in the drive, then you can run a Repair Install (Upgrade over itself) from desktop

I know this thread is kind of old but I'm also having the same problem I think.

I got a new motherboard/processor and am trying to install windows for the first time. I decided to use the 64 bit version of windows 7 since I got a student copy. I keep getting the error message 0xc0000001 after it tries doing some file stuff for a few moments.
I am using a IDE disk drive that's pretty old, could that possibly be the problem? Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks.

What exactly is the error that you are receiving??? This issue may occur if the Security Accounts Manager file (SAM) is corrupted or missing...

Since this thread was started we have solved this error in other threads by focusing on burn or DVD read.

Did you burn the DVD yourself? Verify it with ImgBurn by choosing Verify Disk, load ISO file in to make sure it says Bootable in text at left, then insert DVD to complete Verify.

If necessary, burn another DVD using ImgBurn at 4x speed with verify as it never fails.

If it's not the DVD then it could be the drive you suspect. A way to get around this is to try install using USB flash stick: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31541-windows-7-usb-dvd-download-tool.html?filter[2]=General%20Tips
