Installation Help ( First Time Doing It)

Hello again, you are most welcome.

Have you done Step Three #4 to get Vista booting again, along with Windows 7?

You actually now have what's commonly referred to as a dual boot, you just have to add a boot entry for Vista to the "System" boot files, (the dual boot menu) it is very easy to accomplish.

Do this below and restart Windows 7 and watch what happens when the PC starts back up.
   Note

4) There's one last step if you want to get back to Windows Vista, you will need to use EasyBCD from within Windows 7 to add an entry for Vista to the Windows boot (dual boot) menu but that's the easiest part of this process.

I have one question , now that i have, windows 7 running fine.
How can i move the data from the vista partition to 7 and then erase or shrink the vista one to recover the data that is holding there , half of my hard drive.

To answer your question: If you don't need to boot Vista again, you can just drag it's files over from the Vista User folders into the same Win7 User folders, then delete Vista in Disk Management.

The easiest way to do this is to go Start>Computer to open the Vista User folder - Documents for example - then on Organize tab>Select All, leftclick drag the group to the explorer bar on the left to the same sub-folder in your Windows 7 User folder. Wait to release the left click until it says "Copy to My Documents" and the Explorer bar has stopped unfolding to show sub-folders.

Doing it this way you can copy each Vista User folder over in a matter of minutes to the corresponding Win7 folder. Then once you're certain you have everything needed Delete Vista in Disk management.

If you have any problems, you can take ownership of any User folder using this rightclick shortcut: Take Ownership Shortcut - Windows 7 Forums.

How is performance on new Win7? Have you any missing drivers in Device Manager after enabling hardware auto-updating and checking optional Windows Updates? Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware

I forgot to do step #4 , i'll do it today

At the moment the performance of 7 looks almost the same as vista. Is using around 1.50gb of memory with no programm running , is that normal or a little high for 7 ? The drivers i do believe i have them all so far, it will take some days till i figure out if i'm missing something

Any drivers still missing in Device Manager can be found on the Support Downloads webpage for your model computer or device. Driver Install - Device Manager

Install updates and then programs slowly over time to gauge performance after each. Don't let any programs write themselves into msconfig>Startup as they slow startup, become freeloaders on your RAM/CPU and can spy on you. I only allow AV and gadgets. Startup Programs - Change

Use a lightweight free AV like MS Security Essentials which works perfectly with Windows 7 Firewall. http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

When it is finished, clean and order the HD perfectly using state-of-the-art free CCleaner Disk and Registry tabs, then Puran boot-time defragger after adding it's Intelligent Optimizer on Additional Operations tab.

Then save a Windows 7 Backup image externally so you never have to reinstall again, just reimage the HD (or replacement) using DVD/Repair CD with the stored image. Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup

The whole idea of you being able to take your time moving from Vista to Windows 7 was the reason behind the method I suggested, the other alternative was to move all your personal data to a new created partition and over-write the Vista installation with the Windows 7 install, not the best way forward in the situation you were in.

In this tutorial at the link below is a good, convenient way to move data from one location to another, using the "Move To" option that is added to the right click context menu; just right click something you want to move and browse to the new location and click move.

Context Menu - Add Copy To Folder and Move To Folder

Also when you are finished with Vista, it would be better to do complete partition-specific wipes of that partition and the D: Factory_Image partition before you delete them, especially the D: partition as it may have hot-key pointers still that may cause issues if not over-written by a wipe.

It's discussed in Step Three #5 of the clean install tutorial and also outlined in Option Three of this tutorial.

It's entirely up to you, if you like the dual boot option and would like to continue like it is, if you want, Vista never has to be removed, it will continue as-is for as long as you like.

That being said, one more suggestion; if/when you decide to remove Vista and have everything you need from that partition and you are ready to remove it; to save any possible issues, remove the dual boot option from the Windows 7 msconfig boot tab by clicking Vista to select/highlight the entry and click delete, it will require a Windows 7 restart to complete the process.

Then use the PWBD to wipe those 2 partitions, they will then be "Raw" space that can be deleted in Windows disk management and recreated into a single Primary partition or using Method One of this tutorial to create an Extended partition that will give you Logical drives for storage space.

Partition / Extended : Logical Drives

Hello again.

You will have to reinstall all the programs/apps that you use in Vista to Windows 7 as they integrate themselves into the Windows registry and are not moveable from one Windows installation to another so be sure to save the program activation keys where applicable; only personal data is moveable.

This is a very good little app that will show the program/app activation keys installed to Vista.
